Praise be to God and peace be upon His chosen servants, and after: There have been many questions about the meaning of the hadith that has become well-known on the tongues: Whoever knows himself knows his Lord, and perhaps he understood from it a meaning that has no validity, and perhaps he understood from it a meaning that has no validity, and perhaps it was attributed to a great people, so I have included in this booklet what clarifies the situation and removes the ambiguity, and it contains two articles: The first article: This hadith is not authentic, and Al-Nawawi was asked about it in his fatwas, and he said: It is not proven, and Ibn Taymiyyah:… Al-Zarkashi said in the famous hadiths: Ibn al-Sam’ani mentioned: It is from the words of Yahya bin Muadh al-Razi. The second article on its meaning: Al-Nawawi said in his fatwas: What it means is whoever knows himself by weakness, lack of God, and servitude to Him, knows his Lord by power, divinity, absolute perfection, and the highest attributes.... Al-Qunawi said in explaining recognition: Some of them mentioned in this hadith that it is a matter of commenting on what is not, and that is because knowledge of the soul has closed its door due to His saying: {Say the soul is of the command of my Lord}, thus warning that if a person is unable to realize his self, which is among the creations and is the closest thing to him, then he is unable to know his Creator. incapable; Rather, he is incapable of comprehending the truth of his words and his senses, such as his hearing, sight, smell, speech, and other things. In each of them, people have differences and doctrines from which the observer obtains no benefit, such as their difference in that seeing is by impression or by the emission of a ray, and that smell is by the conditioning of the air or by the emission of parts of something that smells, and other well-known differences. If the situation in these apparent things that a person wears is like this, then what is the situation in knowing the Great, the Transcendent, and you may obtain from what We gave him various sayings regarding the meaning of this narration, and God knows best.
