The University Library of Basel, with its five branches, is one of the most important public information centers in the region. The library, which has a collection of 6 million printed and 3.5 million electronic media and half a million visitors annually, is one of the largest academic libraries in Switzerland. It is also the library of the canton of Basel-Stadt and is open to the public. The library encourages dialogue through numerous temporary exhibitions, events and presentations. The University Library, which was first recorded in 1471, is the oldest secular (non-religious) library in Switzerland. As a memory institution, it carefully preserves its important historical collections dating back to the 8th century; Thanks to a comprehensive digitization program, more and more of the works in its collections are made available online. In its role as an intermediary between academia and society, the library offers a comprehensive learning and meeting environment for different stakeholders.
