University of Göttingen Library

The Göttingen State and University Library (Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen - SUB Göttingen) is a well-established institution, founded in 1734 and one of the largest, most prestigious academic libraries in Germany. Performing a dual function as both the central library of the Georg-August University and the state library of Lower Saxony, the institution is home to approximately 9 million media items. The library has a world-unique collection, especially of 18th-century scientific literature and works from the Enlightenment period. Among its treasures is the Gutenberg Bible (B42), a UNESCO Memory of the World List and one of the rare complete copies printed on vellum. In addition to its historical heritage, SUB Göttingen also plays a leading role in the field of digital librarianship, carrying out pioneering digitization projects through its Göttingen Digitization Center (GDZ) and coordinating specialized information services (FID) throughout Germany.
