The tastefully designed edition contains poems in parallel printing (Arabic/German) by Arab women from today's Iraq, Yemen, Syria, Morocco and Egypt, from the pre-Islamic period (7th century) to the present. The barrenness of Bedouin life, the vain waiting and hoping for a husband: "Why doesn't Abu Hamza come to see us? (...) Is he angry with us because we didn't give birth to a boy?" run through the verses. Eroticism and devotion on the one hand, but also sadness and revenge are expressed and provide an insight into the passionate emotional world of Arab women. The modern poems about the civil war, being abandoned in Damascus and mourning the dead are touching. "What am I still doing here? Alone in this city." In the appendix, an afterword explains the tradition and meter of the older poems. There is also biographical information about the authors. An outstanding collection full of poetry and drama, which is warmly recommended for medium-sized collections and above, especially with regard to Arab refugees as a means of preserving their culture
