Notes Volume one of an encyclopaedia of technical terminology for self-teaching by the Mughal scholar Muhammad Aʻlá ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Qāḍī (Muhammad Ali ibn Ali ibn al-Qazi Muhammad Hamid ibn Muhammad ibn Saber al-Faruqi al-Tahanowi, d. after 1745). The text begins with a preface (ff. 1v-2r) followed by a long introduction (al-Muqaddamah, ff. 2r-37r) in which the author outlines the various types of knowledge, their parts and how they must be approached and presented in scholarly literature. The encyclopaedia entries follow in alphabetical order with a chapter (bab) for each initial letter, and each chapter is subdivided into sections (sections) again arranged alphabetically by the final letter of each item of terminology. The encyclopaedia begins with the entry on punishment (Literature, from Chapter alif , section bāʾ [Chapter A, Chapter Al-Ba' al-Muhada], f. 37r), and volume one ends in the entry on al-ḥawālah (Al-Hawāla, from Chapter ḥāʾ, section lām [Bab al-Haʾa al-Mahmla, chapter lām al-Hasil], f. 264v). The majority of the entries are in Arabic, but some are in Persian. The historical front flyleaves (foliated 1A-F to 1F-F) contain calculations in Kaithi script. Begins (f. 1v, lines 3-4): Praise be to Allah, Who created man, endowed him with the knowledge of expression, and endowed him with the virtues of kindness and instinctive intelligence And the sign of knowledge and prayer on the existence of mercy for the worlds Muhammad, the Messenger of the angels and the greatest gathered Ends (f. 264v, lines 17-19): ... And when you enter a remittance that does not exist in it, it is not a religious facility The impossible on him if before the referral is established in his claim to the impossible and that justice of the definition of the sheikhs by that quote The one who issues the remittance to the remittance and does not issue the remittance to the borrower
