ملاحظات Volume one of an encyclopaedia of technical terminology for self-teaching by the Mughal scholar Muḥammad Aʻlá ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Qāḍī Muḥammad Ḥāmid ibn Muḥammad ibn Ṣābir al-Fārūqī al-Tahānawī (محمد أعلى بن علي بن القاضي محمد حامد بن محمد بن صابر الفاروقي التهانوي, d. after 1745). The text begins with a preface (ff. 1v-2r) followed by a long introduction (المقدمة, ff. 2r-37r) in which the author outlines the various types of knowledge, their parts and how they must be approached and presented in scholarly literature, concluding with a survey of the sciences. The encyclopaedia entries follow in alphabetical order with a chapter (باب) for each initial letter, and each chapter subdivided into sections (فصول) again alphabetically arranged by the final letter of each item of terminology. The encyclopaedia begins with the entry on adab (أدب, from Chapter alif , section bāʾ [باب الألف فصل الباء الموحدة], f. 37r), and volume one ends in the entry on al-ḥawālah (الحوالة, from Chapter ḥāʾ, section lām [باب الحاء المهملة فصل اللام الحاصل], f. 264v). The majority of the entries are in Arabic, but some are in Persian. The historic front flyleaves (foliated 1A-F to 1F-F) contain calculations in Kaithi script, which are unrelated to the main text of the manuscript. Begins (f. 1v, lines 3-4): الحمد لله الذي خلق الإنسان وعلمه البيان وخصصه بروائع الإحسان وميزه بالعقل الغريزي وأتم العرفان والصلوة على من وجوده رحمة للعالمين محمد رسول الملائكة والثقلين أجمعين Ends (f. 264v, lines 17-19): ... وكذا دخل فيه الحوالة التي لا يكون فيها على المحيل دين فإن المحتال عليه إذا قبل الحوالة يثبت في ذمته للمحتال ولذا عدل عن تعريف المشايخ بأنها نقل الذين من ذمة إلى ذمة إذ يخرج عنه هذه الحوالة المذكورة ولا يخرج عنه الحوالة على المديون
