Notes
The commentary of the Holy Quran written by Ebussuûd Efendi. The work started with the Surah Yunus and was quickly corrected and reproduced after it was completed in 1566. A set (2 volumes) of the commentary was presented to Suleiman the Magnificent, the sultan of the period, and in return the author was given a high reward. This commentary of Ebussuûd Efendi was well-accepted in a short time and earned him the title of "Sultânü'l-müfessirîn" (Yerinde 2011: 340-342). In the introduction part of the work, information about the reason for the copyright of the commentary and how it was written is included. Accordingly, while writing this work, the author benefited greatly from Zemahşerî's el-Keşşâf and Beyzâvî's commentary titled Envârü't-Tenzî. Apart from these, Fahreddin er-Razi's commentary is one of the important sources used by the author. Ebussuûd Efendi followed various methods while writing his commentary. The most important of these is the interpretation of the Quran with the Quran. For example, Ebussuud Efendi interpreted the phrase "fighting on the side of those who have betrayed themselves" in the 107th verse of the An-Nisa Surah by referring to the 187th verse of the Baqara Surah. According to this verse, a person betrays himself by committing sin. Another method used is to interpret the Quran with hadith. Ebussuûd Efendi stated that the "middle prayer" mentioned in verse 238 of Surah Baqara is the "afternoon prayer" and that Hz. He explained it with the narration of the hadith that the Prophet said during the Battle of the Trench: "They prevented us from the middle prayer - which is the afternoon prayer -...". Apart from these, he touches upon the reasons for the revelation of the verses, makes theological and jurisprudential evaluations, gives extensive space to the recitations, uses narrations of Jewish origin, which sometimes gives information about the existence of Israel but sometimes does not, interprets some allegorical verses, tries to show the eloquence and miraculous aspects of the Holy Quran, and interprets the verses with poetry. Ebussuûd Efendi's method of explanation (using poetry as evidence) and his emphasis on the connection/cohesion of verses/surahs are the methods followed by Ebussuûd Efendi in this commentary (Cerrahoğlu 1974: 197-202). While interpreting the verses of the rules, the author highlighted the views of the Hanafi sect in which he belonged, but also touched upon the views of other sects from time to time and made comparisons between different approaches. İrşâdü'l-'Akli's-Selîm ilâ Mezâya'l-Kitâbi'l-Kerîm, Şevkânî and Şehâbeddin Mahmûd It became a work used as a source by later commentators, especially al-Âlûsî. So much so that Âlûsî referred to Ebussuûd Efendi's interpretation in almost every verse he interpreted (Ateş 2000: 457). Although this commentary has been a work praised for its unique features and impact, it has also been criticized because it contains quotes and fabricated hadiths from Kelbî and Mukâtil bin Süleyman, who were accused of lying. There are hundreds of manuscript copies of the work in both world and Istanbul libraries (Yerinde 2011: 343). It has been the subject of many academic studies. İrşâdü'l-'Akli's-Selîm was previously published in 11 volumes by Boğaziçi Publications, and was recently published in 9 volumes by İSAM. For the author's biography, see.
