Notes
The author's work explaining the meaning of sema and music in Sufism. It is a small treatise written in Arabic, approximately four to five pages long. Sema is the general name given to composed words sung with tune or listening to them in Sufi literature. Azîz Mahmud Hüdâyî, the master of the sect, was not indifferent to the subjects of sema and music, which became an important element of the dervish lodges. The author also took into consideration the previous studies and wrote a treatise on this subject, taking into account the oppositions of his time. It is seen that the author generally followed a middle path in his treatise, accepting music and the sky. According to him, the sky contains divine secrets. It becomes evident in the faithful lovers. Those who know it properly are those who are fond of it. Sema is divided into two: imitation and verification. Imitation sky is the sky of those who emulate those who make the real sky and try to be like them. The purpose of resemblance here is to be like those who are in ecstasy and mood. As a matter of fact, "Whoever imitates a people is one of them." (Ebû Davûd, Libas 4) It is stated. The investigative version of the sky has two parts. Some of them are natural and the other are spiritual/divine. What is natural comes into existence with beautiful sounds and melodies. The spiritual/divine heaven, on the other hand, is spiritual and does not occur with melody or chanting. The spiritual sky is the sky of the great people of inquiry. They are absolute connoisseurs of the sky. They are not limited to melodies. The melody does not affect them. The difference between the natural sema that occurs through melody and the spiritual sema that occurs from spirituality is that the first one comes into existence with the influence of chant and melodies. The movement of the owner of the natural sky is similar to the movement of heaven. The difference between the divine sky and the natural sky is that the movements of the owner of the natural sky are in the form of confusion and inappropriate movements like madmen. The author states that the real sky of the Sufis is the authentic sky; He states that it also has a divine and spiritual style. The oldest manuscript copy of the work is Köprülü Ktp. It is dated 1583/7 and 1016/1607. This treatise was translated by Mehmet Muizziddin Celvetî, one of Hüdâyî's disciples. A copy of this translation is in Süleymaniye Mihrişah Sultân 253/16.
