Notes XIX. The work of Sheikh al-Islam Arif Hikmet, one of the 19th century Ottoman statesmen, containing poems in Turkish, Arabic and Persian. Sheikh al-Islam Arif Hikmet could not organize the poems he wrote while he was alive in the form of a divan. After his death, his student Tırnakçızâde Ziver Bey and some of his friends collected the poet's poems from poetry magazines and arranged them in a divan. Other figures who helped in the organization and tabulation of the Divan-ı Hikmet were Şeyhülislâm Hüsameddin Efendi, Mehmed Kâmil Efendi from the Mavali and Şem'î Efendi, one of the inspectors of the Evkaf-ı Hümâyun. Ziver Bey set the date for bringing together the poems in the work as 1282/1865-1866, and the date for the publication of the work as 1283/1866-1867. Ziver Bey, who wrote the introduction of the work, gave information here about Sheikh al-Islam Arif Hikmet's birth and death dates, his marriage, the duties he performed, his artistic personality and the works he wrote. At the end of the introduction, he states that some of the poet's friends, in order to prevent the poet's works from being forgotten, brought together all the poems they had obtained, in accordance with the idea of "Mâ lâ yudrek kulluhu lâ uyrek culluhu" (If something is not achieved completely, some of it is indispensable) (Dîvân-ı Arif Hikmet 1283: 7-8). After the introduction, hurûf-ı hecâ method, first the poet's Arabic poems were included. Arabic poems are located between pages 10-74, Persian poems are between 78-118, and Turkish poems are located between 122-265 pages, respectively. At the end of the Divan, there is a historical poem and a ketebe record written by Ziver Bey about the organization of the Divan. The Turkish poems in the Divan are numerically more than the Arabic and Persian poems. At the end of Arabic, Persian and Turkish poems, there are historical poems written for various events and people of the period in those languages. There is also a small volume Sâkînâme among Persian poems. The poet, who uses the pseudonym Hikmet in his poems, has poems written in many verse forms such as ode, ghazal, mesnevi, müseddes, rubai, müfred, tastir in his divan. The work was printed in Matbaa-ı Amire. A graduation thesis was prepared by Sağlam (1947) about the Arabic poems in the divan and the translation of these poems. A master's thesis (1994) was written by Kemikli, dealing with the poet's life and works, followed by a book study (2003). For the poet's biography, see. “Hikmet, Şeyhülislâm Ahmed Ârif”.
