Notes
An article written by Mirza Fethali Ahundzade in 1862. The author wrote this article as an introduction to his work titled Mecmua-i Vâkıf and other Contemporaries, which he composed from the poems of Azerbaijani poets Molla Panah Vâkıf and Kâsım Bey Zakir, but could not publish. This article of his includes his views on poetry and verse. In his article About Nazm and Nesr, Ahundzade defines poetry in terms of eloquence, beauty of expression, arousing excitement and admiration and leaving an impact on a person, and says that poetry is in verse; However, he states that not every verse is poetry. The author states that since the Hijri date, verse and poetry have been considered the same, and everyone who writes in verse is called a poet; However, he says that not everyone who writes in verse can be a poet. According to him, Firdevsî, Nizamî, Camî, Se'dî, Molla-yı Rumî and Hâfız are real poets; However, in their poems, most of the words are expressed in exaggerated descriptions. Anyone who is educated, especially those who belong to the Persian people, is capable of writing most words in verse; But it is a mistake to call these people poets. Ahundzade states that there is not even a real theme in many things written in verse, and that ghazals, in particular, do not evoke enthusiasm or admiration in human temperament. He appreciates Molla Penah Foundation and Kasım Bey Zakir's poems very much. The author states that he sees them as real poets and that Molla Panah is a guide; However, he concludes his article by saying that Kasım Bey's poems are admirable and emphasizing that not every verse writer is a poet and admonishing them not to bother. Yavuz Akpınar, in his doctoral thesis; He states that Ahundzade thinks that new ideas should be expressed with new metaphors, that new ideas can be expressed in genres such as ghazals, odes and mesnevi, and that Ahundzade opposes metaphors rather than classical verse forms. As a matter of fact, in this article, Ahundzade stated that most poets do not have a real theme in their poems. Moreover, in this article, Ahundzade also writes that Fuzulî is not a real poet, he is only a master of verse; However, Akpınar states that he made this comment because Ahundzade was not familiar with Turkish poetry, on the contrary, Fuzulî has all the features that Ahundzade was looking for in poetry.
