Tarih Early 19th century (CE, Gregorian)
Notlar An abridgement, without maps, of the Book of Pleasant Journeys into Faraway Lands (نزهة المشتاق في اختراق الآفاق) completed in 1157 or 58 by Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad al-Idrīsī al-Qurṭubī (أبو عبد الله محمد الإدريسي القرطبي, c.1100-1166) and also known as the Kitāb Rujār ( Book of Roger ) for its patron, King Roger II of Sicily (reg. 1112-54). The abridgement copied in the present manuscript was one of the first Arabic books to be printed in Europe [Al-Idrīsī, De Geographia Universali: Kitāb Nuzhat al-mushtāq fī dhikr al-amṣār wa-al-aqṭār wa-al-buldān wa-al-juzur wa-al-madāʼin wa-al-āfāq (Rome: Medici Press, 1592)], with its Latin translation published soon afterwards [Idrīsī, Geographia nubiensis: id est accuratissima totius orbis in septem climata divisi descriptio, continens praesertim exactam vniuersae Asiae, & Africae, rerumq[ue] in ijs hactenus incognitarum explicationem , translated by Gabriel Sionita and Joannes Hesronita (Paris: Hieronymi Blageart, 1619)]. The Nuzhat follows the cartographical tradition laid out by al-Khwārizmī (الخوارزمي, fl. 813-846) in his Kitāb Ṣūrat al-Arḍ consisting of a postulated world map and lists of co-ordinates of locations in the known world, arranged into seven climes (أقاليم), with each clime subdivided into ten sections (جزء). Al-Idrīsī cites Ptolemy via al-Khwārizmī, as well as numerous Arab geographers of earlier periods. Contents: Introduction (ff. 1v-4r); The First Clime (الإقليم الأول, ff. 4r-18v); The Second Clime (الإقليم الثاني, ff. 18v-33r); The Third Clime (الإقليم الثالث, ff. 33r-71v); The Fourth Clime (الإقليم الرابع, ff. 71v-105r); The Fifth Clime (الإقليم الخامس, ff. 105r-124v); The Sixth Clime (الإقليم السادس, ff. 124v-136v); The Seventh Clime (الإقليم السابع, ff. 136v-139v). Colophon Section at the end of a manuscript text. (f. 139v, lines 17-22): ... فهذا جميع ما اتصل بنا من أوصاف أقطار الأرض من معمور ومغمور فتبارك الله رب العالمين
