Notes	An abridgement, without maps, of the Book of Pleasant Journeys into Faraway Lands (Nzahat al-Mushtaq fi Ikhtaraq al-Afaq) completed in 1157 or 58 by Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad al-Idrīsī al-Qurtubi (Abu Abdullah Muhammad al-Idrisi al-Qurtubi, c.1100-1166) and also known as the The Book of Rujār ( Book of Roger ) for its patron, King Roger II of Sicily (reg. 1112-54). The abridgement copied in the present manuscript is one of the first Arabic books to be printed in Europe [Al-Idrīsī, De Geographia Universali: Kitāb Nuzhat al-mushtāq fī dhikr al-amṣār wa-al-aqṭār wa-al-buldān wa-al-juzur wa-al-madāʼin wa-al-āfāq (Rome: Medici Press, 1592)], with its Latin translation published soon afterwards [Idrīsī, Geographia nubiensis: id is very accurate totius orbis in seven climate divisions description, contains exactly the various parts of Asia, & Africa, rerumq[ue] in its thousands of incognito explanations , translated by Gabriel Sionita and Joannes Hesronita (Paris: Hieronymi Blageart, 1619)] The Nuzhat follows the cartographical tradition laid out by al-Khwārizmī (al-Khwārizmī, fl. 813-846) in his Kitab Ṣūrat al-Arḍ consisting of a postulated world map and lists of co-ordinates of locations in the known world, arranged into seven climes (regions), with each clime subdivided into ten sections (sections). Al-Idrīsī quotes Ptolemy via al-Khwārizmī, as well as numerous Arab geographers of earlier periods. Contents: Introduction (ff. 1v-4r); The First Clime (The First Clime, ff. 4r-18v); The Second Clime (Second Clime, ff. 18v-33r); The Third Clime (The Third Clime, ff. 33r-71v); The Fourth Clime (Al-Iqlim al-Rab', ff. 71v-105r); The Fifth Clime (Al-Iqlim al-Khams, ff. 105r-124v); The Sixth Clime (al-Iqlim al-Sads, ff. 124v-136v); The Seventh Clime (Al-Iqlim al-Sab', ff. 136v-139v). Begins (f. 1v, lines 1-6): وبه الاعانة Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds المسمي بنزهة المشتاق في اختراق الأفاق وتأملت معانيه And the purpose is the best source and import except that it is more than a word And return and deficit from mentioning some of the countries and free at the expense of what you love وأراد فأخذت من کلامه ما وافق المراد.
