Age of acquisition refers to the age at which a word is first learned. Research shows that age of acquisition is a highly important variable in word processing tasks. The age of acquisition effect arises from how information is stored and accessed in the brain and is used to answer theoretical and practical research questions about the mind. For example, research in clinical psychology shows that the age of acquisition effect differs in participants with brain damage or neurological disorders (e.g., Alzheimer's disease, aphasia, semantic dementia, and dyslexia) compared to participants without these disorders. Studies in the field of neuroscience show that early and late acquired words are associated with different brain activations. Although it has a very long and rich history in the international literature, it appears that there are very few empirical studies on age of acquisition in the Turkish literature. In this review, the basic findings and theories on age of acquisition were examined, and the subjective and objective procedures of age of acquisition norms and basic findings were presented comparatively. After examining the theoretical and methodological problems in the field, the application areas of age of acquisition, including clinical psychology, neuroscience and second language acquisition, are discussed and suggestions for future research are presented.
