Over thirty years after the appearance of the first narratives in Italian by migrants, this book takes into consideration one of the peculiar characteristics of their writing, namely the massive presence of words and expressions of their mother tongue, which are thus kept alive in the welcoming language and proposed to Italian readers. The research is conducted on a specific corpus made up of 157 novels and short stories published in Italy between 1990 and 2020, written by 91 authors from 34 different states; Over 500 entries collected in a glossary were extracted from this corpus. The textual phenomenology, the numerous graphic variants, the grammatical classes assumed in Italian, the semantic fields most involved (especially gastronomy and clothing, but also religion, music, objects), the languages of origin (at least 30 ascertainable) and the fortune of these migrant words, indicators of a possible lexical renewal due to the contact between Italian and the languages of migrants, are analysed.
