Notes
The common opinion among students of Arab culture asserts that the beginning of the modern era dates back to the beginning of the nineteenth century, and this is based on observing the effects of Arab contact with Europe and their contact with European culture. In the last three decades of the twentieth century, another opinion began to emerge that traces the beginning of modern Arab culture to the period of the eighteenth century. This study on “The Unknown Beginning of the Renewal of the Grammatical Lesson” is related to one of the books presented by one of the Levantine Christians in the eighteenth century, which is the book “Investigation of the Demands in the Science of Arabic,” written by Bishop Germanus Farhat the Maronite of Aleppo in 1705, then abbreviated in 1707. It deals, therefore, with a book from the eighteenth century that represents, in the environment of the Levant in particular, the stage of the beginning of the modern era in Arab culture. The writings of Germanus Farhat on poetry, language, and grammar represent examples of the phenomena of innovation in the environment of the Levant in the eighteenth century, and this is what was revealed by comparing these writings with both the writings before and after them. This study that we present to the reader is only one of several studies that we hope to complete in order to reread the true, unknown beginnings in a number of areas of modern Arab culture, especially the areas of literature, criticism, and language. The reader has the right to be frank with him, first of all, about the paradox contained in this study. Its field is the field of grammatical study, which is considered the field of modern Arab culture most connected to the Middle Arab heritage, while - in terms of its approach - it seeks to develop a contemporary methodology that benefits from the contributions of some contemporary critical trends in analyzing creative and critical texts. This methodology also relied on comparison as a basic methodological procedure that contributes to revealing aspects of similarities and differences between the book “Research of Demands” on the one hand, and Rifa’a al-Tahtawi’s book “The Library Masterpiece,” which many scholars considered to be the first attempts to renew the grammatical lesson in the modern era, and a huge number of books on the Arab grammatical heritage, especially the short or concise books that modern linguistic studies classify within the framework of “educational books on Arabic grammar” on the other hand. Bibliography: p. 94-100.
