Praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds, and prayers and peace be upon our Master Muhammad, his family and all his companions. As for what follows: This is the book of rhymes. Know that the science of rhymes is an honorable science in relation to prosody, such as the ratio of morphology to grammar. It is the custom of most prosodic scholars to mention the science of rhymes after the science of prosody, but some of them said that the science of rhymes is a venerable science that is not appropriate to be made in addition to knowledge. Sheikh Abu Al-Fath Ghthman Ibn Jinni, the grammarian of Al-Mawsili, said in the beginning of the book Al-Mu’arab, the science of rhymes in general, even if it is connected to the prosody and like the part of it, but it is more delicate and gentle than it, and the one who examines it needs skill in the science of morphology, derivation, language, and parsing, and with its close relative it is difficult to understand, Sami Al-Mutla’, War Al-Malik. And know that there is a difference between scholars in the definition of rhyme. Sheikh Abu Al-Hasan Saeed bin Musaad Al-Akhfash said, “Rhyme” is the last word in the verse, like Jawad Sud Imad, but it is not like that because among the number of rhymes is Al-Muttakawas, which are four vowels between two consonants, and nothing like that occurs in a single word of the Arabs. Muhammad ibn al-Mustin al-Nahwi, known as Qatrub al-Qafiyyah, said: “The letter ruyi” on which the poem is built said, “If it were like that, it would be permissible to combine qal with vel because the last of them is lam, and that is not permissible because the suffix with alif does not combine with anything else.... It is objectionable for the fatḥah to occur with a ḍamma or with a kasran, and it is desirable for a ḍamma to occur with a kasra, and this is also not a defect because avoiding a defect is not a defect. Note: If these faults are combined in some order, there are usually virtues, such as building the entire poem on a single word in rhyme, as this is what is good at slowing down, or like building it on the lam, meem, nun, lam, meem, nun until its end in suffix, or like building it on a dhammah, then a fathah, then a kasra, and adhering to that until its end, as well as in the chain of suffixes, directives, and other things. And perhaps they built the entire poem on the embedment, so this caused it to be good, as some of them say: Oh, who is in love, he is eloquent. *** By God, if I had become pregnant from him as I had been carried from one of our soft gazelles, I blamed love, so he left me and did not throw it. I do not know what *** I had suffered from, except that while I was at the door of the palace in some way *** I was asking for their needs, when he shot something like a gazelle, and my heart sank, so he was not wrong *** except that every time he shot the stuffing with his arrows, the more it happened, and this was the last thing that was possible to collect.
