Praise be to God, and peace be upon His servants whom He has chosen. And after: I received a question on Thursday, the sixth of Jumada al-Awwal, in the year one hundred and eighty-eight, and its form: The one responsible and the answer to what is mentioned is that when Jesus, peace be upon him, descends at the end of time, what will he rule in this nation according to the law of our Prophet or his law? And if you say that he rules according to the law of our Prophet, then what is the way he rules according to one of the four established schools of thought or through his own ijtihad? ...And I say: I received this question approximately two months ago, on Friday, the fourth twenty of Rabi’ al-Awwal of this year. Some virtuous people who learned from my father came to me and asked me about things, including this question, and I answered him with a brief answer. Among the things he asked me about in that meeting was the story of the angels shying away from Uthman, and I brought to him about that two strange hadiths that I extracted from the history of Ibn Asakir, and included them in my book The History of the Caliphs in the translation of Uthman ibn Affan, may God be pleased with him. From him, and here I am mentioning in these papers the answer to this question by way of simplification... His answer: That he rules according to the law of our Prophet, not according to his law. This has been stated by the scholars, and the hadiths have mentioned it, and consensus has been established on it. Among the scholars’ texts regarding this is Al-Khattabi’s statement in Ma’alim al-Sunnah when mentioning the hadith that Jesus kills pigs: It contains evidence of the obligation of killing pigs, and a clarification that their essence is impure, and that is because Jesus, peace be upon him, only kills pigs according to the rule of the law of our Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. And peace, because his revelation will only occur at the end of time, and the law of Islam will remain....And this reprehensible saying: The Prophet is too high in status to pray behind other than a Prophet - his answer: Our Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, is the highest in station and highest in rank among the prophets, and he prayed behind Abd al-Rahman bin Awf once, and behind Abu Bakr al-Siddiq another time, and he said: No prophet died until he prayed behind a man from his nation. This has been proven in authentic hadiths, so how can this reprehensible person go about saying this after that? I am not surprised by the denial of someone who does not know, but rather I am impressed by his ability to write that down in a paper that will live on after him, and written in his newspaper. Then I saw in Ibn Abi Shaybah’s work: Abu Usama told us, on the authority of Hisham, on the authority of Ibn Sirin, he said: The Mahdi is from this nation, and he is the one who leads Jesus, the son of Mary, peace be upon him.
