First of the letters addressed by Sultan Suleiman to King Francis I of France between 1526 and 1543. The year it was written corresponds to the period when Francis I, defeated at Pavia, was in captivity with Charles V. It is a response of support from the Turkish Sultan to the King of France who is seeking a military alliance against his rival. This piece is accompanied by its printed translation.. Bears on the back Ottoman seals in the name of Jouannin (?) linked with a red ribbon and a label including the handwritten notice "Letter from Suleiman Emperors of the Turks written to King Francis I during the prison, this is the first letter to be found written to our Kings by the Ottoman Emperors".. 15 lines to the page, black, blue, gold inks. Invocations in gold letters bordered with a very fine black line; tuğra in blue ink, gold threads, illuminated; the text of the letter is in black ink with gold powder, vocalization in blue ink, decorated with gold diacritics, black lines; the occurrences of الله and for consideration the three words حق سبحانه و تعالی in the text are in gold ink bordered with black lines as well as the name of the Sultan and his genealogy which are written in larger letters compared to the text, in blue ink, bordered with gold.
