Notes
Other file(s) linked to this institution: FRBAMCCFR-000060-01b.xml. Very beautiful vocalized mamlouk neskhi, copied in Cairo, in the first half of the 15th century, for the Turkish dictionary; Turkish nestalik from the 17th century, for the terǧiʿ-bend of ʿIraki.. Neither the title nor the name of the author appear in the preface (folio 7 verso), but they are given, in a form which leaves no room for doubt, in a decorated page, on folio 7 recto. The author, as we see by his nickname el-Turki التركى, was not a subject of the Osmanli empire; It is visible that he worked in Cairo, with the intention of establishing a vocabulary of the language spoken by the Mamluks who reigned in Egypt. He treats his work as a glossary of the Turkic language ترجمان اللغة التركيّة, and he says that he wrote it by compiling the الانوار المضية of ʿAla ed-Din Bilik el-Kibǧaki, and the الصحيح من الدرّة المضية, of ʿImad ed-Din Daoud ibn ʿAli ibn Mohammed el-Varrak (the bookseller) el-Misri, both Egyptians, as the name of Bilik, very common in Cairo, at the time of the Mamluks, and the nickname el-Misri. He states that he greatly increased what he found in these two authors, by questioning people well versed in the knowledge of the Turkish language. This dictionary is divided by order of subjects; the first chapter (folio 8 recto) contains the names, and begins with those of God تنكرى; the second (folio 9 recto) deals with the earth and what is found there; but this division is not continued; on folio 16 verso, are the numbers: سكّز, يدّى الطى, بش, ترت, اج, اكّى, بر طقّز; on folio 20 verso, the chapter of verbs, arranged alphabetically, according to the initial of the Arabic verb, conjugated like its Turkish equivalent in a large number of forms. The manuscript is incomplete from its last leaves, and it ends in the course of the chapter of verbs beginning with w; it was copied for a certain ʿUmar ibn ʿOsman el-Ğaʿferi; there we find an ex-libris dated 855 (1451), and a reading certificate, dated that same year; we read on leaves 1-6, in a modern hand, a terǧiʿ-bend in Persian, by ʿIraki, extracts from the Makhzen el-esrar and the Leïla and Meǧnoun by Nizami.. Coislin.. Turkish cardboard.
