Jacques Rancourt was born in 1946 in Lac-Mégantic, Quebec. Poet, anthologist and translator, he promotes bridges between languages and cultures and the French-speaking world in its diversity. Since his studies in Laval and Paris in the 1970s, his activities have been shared between France and Quebec. In 1982 he took over the management of the Franco-English Poetry Festival, in which he had been active since its foundation in Marly-le-Roi in 1976. Initially a place for the oral expression of poetry, with workshops, readings and meetings until its interruption in 1979, the Festival was, under Jacques Rancourt, more refocused on questions surrounding translation. The poets invited to the meetings in Paris exchange their versions, French for the original English texts and vice versa. To do this, the authors are rarely professional translators and not systematically bilingual. In addition to these translation workshops, Franco-English meetings also take place, as well as symposia from 1986. The Festival is also accompanied by an exhibition “Reverberations” where connections take place between poetry and the visual arts. The meetings finally included a musical program from 1987, then, under the direction of Monique Rancourt, pieces adapted from the poems presented from 1992 and, in 2010, the translation was also available from text to video. Each edition is attached to a theme, and since 1982, the holding of the Festival has been accompanied by the publication of a magazine, La Traductière, keeping track of the translations retained by the different authors, as well as reproductions of graphic or plastic works exhibited, and the texts of the studies presented during the meetings. Until 1988, the Festival was held mainly at the Canadian Cultural Center, but also at the BPI of the Center Pompidou for public readings, then mainly at the Théâtre des Déchargeurs, at the Maison des Writers and at the House of Poetry. In the 2000s, certain editions were relocated, for example to Montreal in 2003 or to Melbourne in 2008. In addition to French and English-speaking literature, the Festival and the magazine opened up to other languages, from Romania, China and Singapore. In 2014, Jacques Rancourt handed over management to Maria Linda Baros and in 2016, he transferred the archives to the Arsenal Library.
