Notes
The book examines theoretical and practical problems of translating works of Arabic literature, as well as important general philosophical issues. As a starting point, the scientist chose the translation he published in 1907 in Kazan of selected fragments of the voluminous (more than 13,000 bayt) poem “al-Luzumiyatu ma lam yalzam” (“The Obligation of the Optional”), written by the medieval Arab poet and philosopher Abu al-Ala al-Maarri (m. 973-1057/58). In this light, the book “Garәp әdәbiyaty ilә golum islamiyә” can be considered as an addition to the mentioned translation.
In the book “Garәp әdәbiyaty ilә golum islamiyyә” Musa Bigiyev not only introduces the reader to the outstanding ideas of the Islamic philosopher Abu al-Ala al-Maarri, but also brings clarity to the definition of the term “Arabic literature”, critically analyzes the content of religious works and treatises used in the educational process in Tatar madrassas, as well as the content and methodology of the educational process. The author gives a brief overview of the outstanding literary monuments of the Arab people, offers the reader a serious critical analysis of the methods of making legal decisions and religious argumentation used by fuqahas and muhaddis, whose conclusions are given against the background of excerpts from the religious and philosophical teachings of Abu al-Ala, touching on the problem of free thought, its significance and dignity, as well as talking about the vast universe and immutable religious truths. At the end of the book, the author, in an impartial and tactful form, provides his religiously based responses to respected scholars who have issued refutations of what is stated in the translation of the poem “al-Luzumiyat”.
