Sample Text In Shia Islam, qiyas (analogy) is not recognized as a source of law. There are two interpretations of what follows. Based on Ahbari's view, the only sources of law are the Qur'an and the hadith, and all cases not explicitly covered by them must be regarded as having no support. Based on the majority view of usul (the basis of justice), it is legitimate to look for general principles by means of induction to provide support for cases for which there is no express foundation. Such a procedure is called ijtihad and akl (reason) is recognized as the source of justice. It differs from Sunni qiyas (analogy) in that existing laws do not simply extend to the test of confirmed similarity, it is necessary to formulate a general principle that can be rationally supported. Year of publication: 1573/1574.
