Notes As it is known, language plays an important role in meeting the need for communication, understanding and sharing between people. In this context, Arabic, in addition to being an ancient language, stands out as one of the communication tools, especially in terms of political, commercial, economic and tourism relations with Middle Eastern countries. In our country, Arabic Language Teaching, Arabic Language and Literature, Religious Sciences, Islamic Sciences and Theology Faculties provide Arabic teaching. These institutions attach great importance to the teaching of Arabic, and therefore learning Arabic provides the ability to understand and interpret religious sources as well as the ability to use a language widely spoken in the Muslim geography. However, studies on teaching Arabic are not sufficient. Therefore, the research aimed to determine the theology preparatory class students' perceptions of Arabic through metaphors. Because metaphors shorten the meanings that exist in the minds of participants about a subject within the framework of the process of making sense of it through perceptual similarity and shed light on the understanding of that subject. For this reason, it was concluded that a research on Arabic should be conducted on the preparatory class student group. For this purpose, firstly, a semi-structured survey was directed online to 180 students studying in preparatory classes and they were asked to fill out this survey. Data were collected using "open-ended questions form". Then, the survey results were handed over to experienced experts who had participated in studies on this subject in the academy for evaluation, and the evaluations of the mentioned experts regarding these survey results were taken as basis in the study. Personal information was not requested from the participants and they were informed that the data would only be used within the scope of the research. Before the data collection process, participants were given examples of metaphors and explained them. Then, an open-ended question was asked to the participants: "Arabic is like .... Because ...". The concept of "like" aims to establish the connection between the source and the subject, and the concept of "because" aims to reveal the logical justifications of the metaphors created by the group. The researchers collected research data through Google forms between 01 March and 01 April 2023, on the basis of participant volunteering, with the preparatory class students of the Faculty of Theology at Kilis 7 December University. The study was completed in accordance with statements of compliance with ethical principles. It should be noted that out of 180 surveys, 66 surveys were not evaluated because they were not filled out properly or were incomplete. In this way, 114 valid metaphors were first determined from the answers given by 180 people, 128 women and 52 men, who participated in the research, and then these 114 metaphors were divided into 9 different categories. In the metaphor analysis phase, the metaphors produced were coded and sorted. Researchers examined the participants' reasons for producing and explaining metaphors. By eliminating inappropriate examples, 114 metaphors were ultimately determined under nine themes. The number of participants ensured that the number of valid metaphors was high. In addition, the participants were classified according to their characteristics such as gender, age, high school they graduated from and whether they were in the preparatory class. In this way, it is thought that a significant contribution will be made to the literature in terms of sociology and language-culture by revealing the similarities and differences in the participants' perceptions of the concept of Arabic. Data analysis was carried out with a phenomenological approach, extracting meanings from experiences. The content analysis was conducted to reveal themes that describe and introduce facts and events following conceptualization of the data. Finally, the findings are presented in a descriptive manner with direct quotations. This process continued until 100% consensus was reached among researchers and experts. Because this is important to ensure the reliability of the qualitative study. In addition, an attempt was made to increase the external consistency and credibility of the research by using quotations while explaining and interpreting the findings. In the final stage, findings on metaphors and conceptual themes were presented, comparison and discussion were made. In this context, the participants touched upon the difficulty in language learning with the metaphors they produced about the concept of Arabic, such as mountains and stairs. On the other hand, some participants emphasized the ease of language learning with metaphors such as life and love. Although the results of the research do not provide definitive and generalizable results, they can reveal explanations and experiences that help us better understand the event and phenomenon. Therefore, the research is expected to make significant contributions to practice and literature.
