Notes
Historiography constitutes an important part of research in the field of history. When it comes to the historiographical activities of Muslim authors, issues such as how they recorded historical knowledge from the early ages of Islam, what kind of works they presented, the relationship of these works with the literary tradition of other nations that lived in history, and the schools that influenced the historiographical activity come to the fore. Especially since the beginning of the 20th century, many works examining the historiography of Muslim authors in various forms have been written. After Brockelmann's work, which was one of the first examples, Günaltay and other authors later wrote works introducing Muslim historians. On the other hand, works investigating how Muslims carried out their historiography and the problems around which historiography was formed were also written. During and after the writing of the book A History of Muslim Historiography (F. Rosenthal), which can be considered as the first important example, many works were written that evaluated Islamic historiography in a problematic style. Many similar examples of these two works have emerged in Turkish and other languages. Muslim historiography constitutes a huge literature today. In the relevant literature, many issues such as the origins of Muslim historiography, in what ways and for what reasons Muslim historians wrote history, the forms of historical works, the course of development of historiography, the regional and periodic status of historiography and the schools of historiography have been discussed. Despite this diversity of topics, it seems that Muslim historiography is often considered from within itself and is assumed to be a closed universe. A small number of works or studies have dealt with the ground of Muslim historiography in world history and its differences and similarities with different historiographical traditions. This has caused the place of Muslim historiography in world historiography and its contribution to world historiography to be rarely addressed and therefore to be stuck in certain evaluation patterns. Based on this problem, our study aims to touch upon the studies that deal with Muslim historiography from the mentioned perspective and to exemplify the contribution they offer in terms of evaluating the historiographical activities of Muslim authors. Among the examples examined, the book Introduction to the History of Science, which is the research in which this perspective manifests itself in the most comprehensive way, constitutes the main area of study. The work written by George Sarton covers the five centuries of Muslim historiography within the history of science and offers remarkable evaluations about Muslim historians. In addition to the information he gives about Muslim historians, the issues he raises while examining the subject make him a relative of both types of historiography works mentioned above. Sarton offers a rich knowledge about the place of Muslim historiography in world historiography, the nature of historiography, the circulation of knowledge in the context of historiography, the source value of historical works, and the special positions of important historians such as Safedî, Reşîdüddin and Ibn Khaldun in history. In our study, we will focus on Sarton's historiographical evaluations shaped within the framework of the historiography of science. We think that this work, which is not cited in studies in the field of historiography, will provide important insights into the knowledge of Muslims in the field of historiography today, both from the information it provides and the topics of discussion it opens.
