Notes Critical Religious Education approach is a pedagogical religious education approach developed by Andrew Wright in England. This approach criticizes phenomenological and constructivist religious education approaches and argues that the ideals of 'searching for the truth' and 'living according to the truth' should be the basis of religious education. Critical Religious Education is based on the principles of ontological realism, epistemic relativism and judicial rationality of the philosophy of Critical Realism. Additionally, Variability Theory is adopted as a learning theory. The main purpose of religious education is to help students develop religious literacy by providing them with rational, critical and reflective thinking skills, so that they can make sense of their own beliefs and different religious and secular worldviews in the modern world. It is argued that Critical Religious Education can be applied to religious education systems focused on a religion or sect, apart from liberal education systems. The purpose of this study is to examine the role of the Critical Religious Education approach in improving teaching and learning in Islamic Religious Education. The study includes a literature research focusing on the theological, philosophical and pedagogical foundations of Critical Religious Education and then the reflections of this approach on Islamic Religious Education.
