Mystical experience is among the rare subjects that still maintain its appeal today, despite the difficulties of understanding the sources it is conveyed and the methods followed to reach the experience and various destructive criticisms. In this regard, many studies aiming to explain mystical experience can be found in contemporary discussions. Among these, contextualism, led by S. T. Katz, deals with mysticism in a Kantian spirit and in the light of post-Wittgenstein philosophical developments. In the contextualist approach, the claim of thinkers such as James, Underhill, Zaehner, Otto, and Stace that mystical experience is a pure, universal, direct, common type of experience is rejected and attention is drawn to the relationship between context and experience. The relationship between context-experience, context-text and context-language is discussed from different aspects and it is shown that experience is not independent of the elements in question. Thus, mystical experience becomes a product of the tradition in which it emerged; Such as the Indian mystical experience, the Buddhist mystical experience, the Jewish, Christian and Muslim mystical experience. This present study is the first of two articles that aim to introduce contextualism, which has just taken its place in the discussions in our country. For this purpose, first of all, the premise of "there is no pure experience", which is the basis of contextualism within the framework of Katz's views, will be included, and then the application of this premise to mystical experience will be discussed. Then, the effect of context on mystical experience will be discussed through the theory that prioritizes experience. The second study, which is planned to be a continuation of this, will focus on the process during and after the experience. Thus, it will be possible to study mysticism in more depth, taking into account the questions raised by contextualism.
