Notes
Kyrgyzstan is one of the newly developing countries in Central Asia. This country remained under Soviet rule for many years, and therefore there were various problems regarding religion and religious education in this country. Closing institutions related to religion and religious education, banning religious education activities, and trying to force the Muslim people to adopt the ideologies of communism and atheism are some of these problems. Kyrgyzstan adopted a secular and democratic government after gaining its independence in 1991. After this date, although the state administration was not directly interested in religious education, such as opening religious education institutions, it also allowed the people's demands regarding religion and religious education to be met. For this purpose, various formal and non-formal education institutions have been opened in the country with the support of civilians and foreigners. One of the countries that contribute to this country in terms of education is Turkey. Türkiye has opened primary, secondary and higher education institutions in this country. One of them is Kyrgyzstan-Türkiye Manas University. In this research, issues such as the socio-economic, religious-cultural backgrounds of the students studying at the faculty of theology opened within the university in question, their reasons for choosing this faculty, their satisfaction with this faculty, and the difficulties of receiving theology education in Kyrgyzstan were discussed. The research was conducted by the researcher himself in Bishkek in 2020 and 173 students participated. In this study, based on the survey model, data was collected through a survey containing open and closed-ended questions. Some results obtained from the research are as follows: The participants of the research are from various provinces of Kyrgyzstan and the majority of their parents have middle and lower economic levels. Their families generally live in rural areas. However, it can be said that the education level of the families in question is high. According to the participants' statements, some of their families received religious education from places such as madrasahs and masjids. However, according to the students, their religious knowledge is not high. Some parents do not approve of their children studying at the faculty of theology. The majority of participants chose this faculty willingly and through research. However, a certain part of them made this choice without doing enough research from the relevant environment and resources. Most of the participants said that they preferred this institution for reasons such as learning their religious knowledge, being a good Muslim, being a scholar, studying at a university, having a profession, and the score is only sufficient for this faculty. The majority of the participants are satisfied with studying at the faculty of theology. In this context, they stated that they got to know themselves, their religion and life better thanks to the education here. In addition, the quality of education of the faculty, the qualification of the professors, their close communication/relationship with the students, the peaceful environment in the faculty, the scholarships provided by the faculty, the library, etc. They said they liked the opportunities. Participants stated that the religious education they received here was meaningful and important for them, that this education had a positive impact on their beliefs, worship, and daily lives, and helped them get to know themselves and life. Students participating in the research stated that there are serious problems with studying theology in Kyrgyzstan. In this context, students; They drew attention to issues such as the inability to find a job, the negative view of the state towards religious education, the prejudices of the public and families towards religious education and theology, and the insufficient number of qualified theologians.
