Notes
Theologians have agreed that knowing knowledge of Allah is necessary. However, they could not agree among themselves as to the source of this obligation. This debate has focused especially on whether those who have not received the divine call will be held responsible and what their situation will be in the afterlife. The majority of Maturidi theologians, Mu'tazila and many contemporary theologians accepted knowledge of Allah as a mental obligation and claimed that these people would be deserving of punishment in the afterlife. Ash'arites, Hasheviyya, some of the Shiites, some of the Kharijites and Dirar b. Some prominent theologians such as Amr considered knowledge of Allah as a religious responsibility. On the other hand, another issue on which the theologians agree is that evil eye is necessary regarding knowledge of Allah. In other words, all theologians have claimed that knowledge of Allah can be achieved through reason, and that reason is a tool for knowing Him. According to these different results, the answer to the question of what will be the situation in the afterlife of those who do not know God because no divine message has reached them has also varied. In this context, those who see knowledge of Allah as a mental responsibility say that this person deserves torment in the hereafter; Those who saw a religious obligation claimed that there would be no otherworldly torment.
