Notes
This article examines and analyzes Gualtherus Hendrik Albert Juynboll's basic theories regarding hadith criticism and narration. The study systematically compiles and presents Juynboll's central concepts and emphasizes the importance and applicability of these concepts in terms of contemporary hadith science. Moreover, while the research provides an overview of his most important contributions, it does not aim to comprehensively cover all aspects of his work. The method used is based on critical analysis of primary and secondary sources, focusing on Juynboll's specific approach to isnad-text analysis and his comments on the role of collective memory in hadith narration. In this regard, the origin of isnad, its backward development and claims such as common narrator, changes and transformations in its approach to hadith literature are shown and its basic presuppositions are analyzed. The aspects of Juynboll that differ from the views of Muslim scholars regarding the science of hadith are highlighted. Thus, it is aimed to see different cultural and methodological perspectives more clearly. Taking into account the results of these differences, it is aimed to show what kind of impact Juynboll's studies have on understanding the hadith literature. On the other hand, the evidence he presented in his analyzes and claims, the lack of this evidence, and the persuasiveness of his findings and claims were also discussed and criticized in the article. Because he focused on the arguments that supported him in the context of his basic claims regarding the origin of the science of hadith, and either ignored the opposing arguments or rejected them with problems of belonging. He did not provide sufficient concrete evidence for this. As a result of the study, it was seen that Juynboll took his basic arguments as a measure in his approach to hadith literature, interpreted the sources relatively and made serious claims with hypothetical discourses. After our investigation of the hadith sources he referred to, it was concluded that he was wrong on many points. In this sense, our research makes an important contribution by revealing in a holistic framework how a Western researcher approaches the hadith literature heritage of Muslim scholars, how he evaluates and analyzes it, and the possible consequences of these approaches.
