The Companions are the first Muslim generation to both witness and accompany the revelation of the Qur'an. For this reason, he has both privilege and expertise in the field of interpretation. Because tafsir is a scientific discipline that aims to reveal what the Quran said to the first audience in the historical and social environment in which it was revealed. Te'vil, on the other hand, is the activity of producing ideas and opinions about what the Quran wants to say to humanity in all subsequent times and ages, based on this first and original meaning. Tafsir is fixed, interpretation is variable. Every Muslim who is concerned about being faithful to what the Quran said for the first time is not qualified to make comments independently of the general understanding and comprehension horizon of the companions, even on today's sociological basis. However, today, the issue of what the companions understood from the Quran is consciously ignored, both in order to reveal that the Quran is a divine word that carries universal messages and to make the Quran understood by the age. On the other hand, many contemporary Muslim commentators use the rhetoric of extolling the Companions on issues independent of the interpretation of the Quran. When it comes to understanding and interpreting the Quran, the authority gap created by the elimination of the companions is filled with the modern interpreter's own subjectivity and the Quran is often made to speak arbitrarily.
