Discussions around the shaping of beard and mustache have continued until today. It is possible to summarize the views on this issue in three general points: a) Cutting/shaving the beard is haram or makruh tahrimi. b) It is tanzihi makruh to cut a beard. c) It is permissible to shave a beard. Hz. While the majority of scholars, based on the Prophet's words and actual practices, say that cutting the beard is haram or tahriman makruh, there are two different approaches in the Shafi'i sect. While the majority of the Kahirs preferred the makruh ruling (equivalent to the tanzîh makruh in Hanafis), some Shafi'i jurists, including Imam Shafi'i, held the opinion that cutting the beard is haram, in line with the opinion of the majority. Some recent scholars, on the other hand, have evaluated the narrations on the subject on the axis of customs and traditions, and have evaluated that cutting a beard does not contain any religious/shariah provisions that are haram or makruh, on the contrary, they are permissible words and deeds that encourage the person to be clean and tidy. In the article - unlike previous similar studies - the source of the view that cutting the beard in the Shafi'i sect is makruh and the evidence on which it is based are examined. The comments and approaches of Imam Ghazali, who is considered to be the representative of this view, on the subject were examined. Naturally, this approach of Gazzali had an impact on many competent scholars who came after him within the sect, such as Nawawi and Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, and the concept of "makruh" used by Gazzali was understood as "tanzîhen makruh" according to the general method of the sect. For this reason, in the article, the meaning of the word absolute karahet used by the first period fuqaha was examined. The issue of whether the concept of "makruh" used by both Ghazali and Nawawi signifies "haram" or "tahriman makruh" has been extensively examined. Part of the study focused on the reflections of beard cutting on social life. The approaches to the subject included in the relevant article of the Supreme Council of Religious Affairs and TDV Encyclopedia of Islam have been reinterpreted around the mentioned evidence. In this context, Said Nursi's views and approaches regarding beard, especially representing some religious circles in Turkey, were evaluated within the framework of fiqh criteria.
