Notes
Context plays a very important role in understanding, interpreting and translating the Quran into another language. However, this issue is not taken into account sufficiently in the English translations of the Quran. The same situation is valid for some commentaries written in Arabic. However, some tafsir scholars in the classical period paid attention to determining the context. It is difficult to arrive at the correct meaning when insufficient attention is paid to the context. By context, we mean both the text context and the situation context. Both of these situations affect the meaning. Greater awareness of the importance of the context surrounding particular verses counters and corrects any perception that surahs are structurally chaotic, or that the Qur'an contains implausible statements and historical errors, that rhyming in the Qur'an is merely for decoration, and that Meccan surahs are an imitation of the rhyming speech of the seers. Anyone interested in the exegesis and translation of the Quran must keep the context firmly in mind, both the textual context and the context of the situation.
