Alexandrian Summary (Mosques of the Alexandrians) of Galen's (Galen; d. ca 216)
This anatomical administration
Translated from the Greek by Ḥunayn ibn Isḥāq (Hunayn ibn Ishaq; d. 873). The Arabic title of this summarised version is Fī al-tashrīḥ lil-muta‘allimīn (On Anatomy for Learners).
The text is divided into five books:
Book One: On the Anatomy of Bones
[Book Two:] On the Anatomy of Muscles
[Book Three:] On the Anatomy of Nerves for Students
[Book Four:] On the Anatomy of Veins for Students
[Book Five:] On the Anatomy of Arteries.
Begins (f. 239v, lines 11-13):
Some of the bones are big, some are small, and some of the big bones are hollow
Some of them are solid and have no cavity, and some of them are hollow bones
Some of them are wide and some have a narrow cavity...
Ends (f. 291r, lines 2-6):
...and race
He who comes comes to the fifth vertebra and the race that ascends
To the pulp and the vein that goes up to the armpit and the well-known veins
With my hibernation sweat and the veins that bring the veil and the first people
Which comes to the liver, spleen, stomach, intestines...
Colophon
Section at the end of a manuscript text.
(f. 291r, lines 6-9):
...The mosques of the Alexandrians were completed
For the fifth article from Galen’s book on the anatomy of multiplying veins
Many praise and gratitude be to God, its writer and owner, with the help of God, the One and Only King
Poor, despicable, wise, Khalil Al-Rahman
