Notes
The novel translated by Ali Muzaffer Bey. "Die Leiden des jungen Werthers" is a letter-type work written by the German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 1774, which deeply influenced the modern German novel. The novel consists of Werther's letters to Wilhelm and sections in which the narrator gives information about Werther. Werther, a young law intern, falls in love with Lotte, who is engaged to Albert, after settling in Wahlheim. But when Lotte and Albert marry, Werther becomes just a family friend. Lotte is aware of Werther's love, but she does not want her marriage to be damaged. Over time, when Werther's love for Lotte reaches an uncontrollable point, Lotte is forced to push Werther away from herself. Unable to bear this distance and realizing that he can never be with Lotte, Werther commits suicide with the words "Farewell, Lotte." The translator did not include some paragraphs in the source text in his translation and made changes in many sections. Ali Muzaffer Bey, after mentioning the importance of Goethe and his work in the Hâtime-i Mütercim section, states that some stories were left unfinished even though they were completed and Werther's story can be evaluated in this way. He says that when the novel ends, the reader continues to wonder about Lotte's feelings in the face of Werther's death. Based on the sentence "Lotte's life was feared" in the text, he infers that Werther's feelings were not unrequited and that Lotte loved him too. In addition, Muzaffer Bey discusses whether Werther, who is often linked to Goethe in the criticisms of the novel, is a fictional character and, by making an important determination in his period, reaches the conclusion that a text-centered reading would be more useful. Ali Muzaffer Bey translated this 261-page novel under the name "Verter" in 1315/1899. For Ali Muzaffer Bey's biography, see. “Ali Muzaffer Bey”.Turkish Literature Names Dictionary.
