Notes
Ömer Fânî Efendi's work in which he discusses Sufi subjects. “Samsam” means a sharp sword that bounces back from the wound in Arabic. “Hisâm” also means war and struggle. Accordingly, Samsâmü'l-hisâm means "Sharp Sword of the Fighter" (el-Müncid 1973:434; el-Mü'cemü'l-Vasît 1989:523; Ahter 1316/1898:593). There is no information regarding the year in which the work was written. However, based on the statement in this book, "As we explained in our book Huccetü'n-Neyyire fî Beyâni't-Tarîkati'l-Münîre..." (Fânî Yzm 3808: vr. 60a), it is understood that Ömer Fânî Efendi wrote this book after his work called el-Hücce. Considering Kâtib Çelebi's statement that el-Hucce was written in 1026/1617 (Çelebi 1941: I, 631), it can be said that Samsâmü'l-Hisâm was written between 1026/1617-1033/1624. Ömer Fânî Efendi wrote this work. Nebi b. Turhan b. He stated that he wrote it as a response to a book named Hayâtü'l-Kulûbi by a person named Durmuş es-Sinobi (d. ?), which contained very heavy criticisms of Sufis and issues related to Sufism (Fânî Yzm 3808: vr. 53b-54a). Although es-Sinobi's work, Hayâtü'l-Kulûbadlı, is generally related to Islamic morality, it is a work that harshly criticizes the Sufis and accuses them in some matters, even to the extent of takfir (see es-Sinobî Yzm 703). It can be said that this is why Ömer Fânî named his work (The Sharp Sword of the Struggler), which he wrote as a rejection of the book in question.17. The work, which bears the characteristics of the 19th century Ottoman language, is prose and written in simple and understandable Arabic. A copy of the work is located on pages 53b-63b of a magazine at Istanbul University Ktp., A.Y., number 3808. This copy has ten pages and its language is Arabic. Another copy is located in the 33b-39b folio range of a magazine in Izmir National Library 1395/2 (Fânî Yzm 1395/2; idiz 2011: 127). The language of this work is Arabic. The work can be briefly summarized as follows: es-Sinobi, in his work Hayâtü'l-Kulûbadlı, mentions the Sufis, especially Ibn Arabî; The issue of absolute existence and obvious existence, unity of existence, Ibn Arabi's saying "He who worships idols actually worships Allah", the way of Ibn Arabi's death, whether the interpretation of the dream is correct or not, takfir of those who belong to the Halvetiyye Sect, whether the faith at the time of despair is acceptable or not, Pharaoh's He criticized them harshly, accusing them of takfir, by discussing their opinions such as whether he died in faith, the issue of guardianship and prophethood, whether the Sufis exempted themselves from exoteric worship, whether dance and ecstasy were Samiri's inventions or not. In this work, Ömer Fânî Efendi addressed es-Sinobi's claims one by one and gave answers to all of them within the framework of the Quran and the Sunnah (Fânî Yzm 3808: vr. 53b-63b).
