Notes
Risâle der Makâmât-ı Erba'în is a small work in Persian attributed to Hodja Ahmed Yesevî. It briefly discusses the forty levels and rules that the dervish must reach and overcome on the path of Sufism. In the work, there are four sections as "shariah, sect, knowledge and truth" and forty levels, including ten levels under these four. The only known manuscript copy of the work is in the Zeytinoğlu District Public Library of Kütahya, Tavşanlı District (nr. 1056, vr. 112a-113a). Ahmed Yesevî, in his Turkish work titled Fakrnâme, also said that there are forty positions of being a dervish and listed the ten positions in the sharia section as follows: First, to believe in the existence and unity of Allah. The second is to pray, the third is to fast, the fourth is to give alms, the sixth is to be sweet-spoken, the seventh is to learn knowledge, the eighth is Hz. To fulfill the sunnahs of the Prophet, the ninth is to command goodness, the tenth is to forbid evil. Ahmed Yesevî, in his Persian work titled Risâle der Makâmât-ı Erbaî, listed the ten maqams in the sharia as follows: 1. Maqam: Faith. It is to believe in Allah, angels, books, prophets, apocalypse, destiny, that is, good and evil are from Allah. 2. Position: Being a Muslim. Islam has five conditions. The first is to perform prayer and give alms. It also means fasting... It also means performing pilgrimage. 3rd Station: It is to protect the tongue from empty words and boasting... 4th Station: It is Knowledge. It is necessary to seek knowledge. 5th Office: To get married. 6th Position: Halal food. 7th Position: Hz. It means following the sunnah (way) of the Prophet. 8th Position: Showing compassion and mercy towards God's creations. 9th Position: To wear halal. 10th Maqam: It means staying away from the desires of the soul. When we look at the examples above, the ten maqams in the sharia circle show great similarities in the Turkish Fakrnâme and the Persian Risâle. The second part of the work, "Maqams of the Order", is also discussed as ten levels and rules. The first of these is repentance. The second is to cut the hair with scissors, that is, to cut the hair while entering the dervish path. (In Hoca İshak's Turkish work called Hadîkatü'l-ârifî, which is an early Yesevi source, apparently written in the 14th century, it is stated that the dervish who wanted to follow the Yesevi path had his hair shaved by the sheikh.) The third is to be a disciple, the fourth is to be between fear and hope, the fifth is to overcome and destroy anger, the sixth is to serve the public, the seventh is to own items such as baskets (keşkül), scissors and lamps, The eighth is to be hopeful of God's mercy, the ninth is to have a peaceful and sincere heart, the tenth is to distance oneself from the world. When these ten maqams in the Persian Treatise are compared with the sect maqams in Ahmed Yesevi's Fakrname, a great similarity is seen. In this case, Risâle der Makâm-ı Erba'în is a summary of the information on forty makams in Ahmed Yesevî's Turkish Fakrnâme, rewritten in Persian with minor changes. The manuscript copy of the work was translated into Turkish by Necdet Tosun and published as an article and also as a chapter in the book.
