Notes
The story translated by Ali Muzaffer Bey. Halî Ada is part 3 of the book "Les Cruautés de l'Amour" written by the French artist Judith Gauter in 1879, titled "L'île Déserte". The story begins on a ship sailing to America. The ship is caught in the middle of a storm and is about to sink. Monsieur de Puyroche, Dr. He is under the influence of the opium given by Delton and is too detached from reality to realize his situation. As a result of a great struggle, the passengers are evacuated, but Monsieur de Puyroche and Milady Campbell remain on the Imogene, which is about to fall apart. Although Puyroche is looking for ways to escape the ship, Milady is locked in her cabin because she thinks her husband is dead. They reach the Fiji Islands, where, as Puyroche puts it, terrible cannibals live. During their time on the island, they fall in love with each other and hold a ceremony to get married. But during the ceremony, Lord Campbell appears. The events are revealed through Lord Campbell's narrative. Although Puyroche thinks they are in the Fiji Islands, they are actually only 3 leagues away from the city of Arcachon, and they are not on a deserted island, but on a beach not preferred by the public. The work becomes Puyroche's tragedy, as told by Lord Campbell. Puyroche loses the woman he loves and realizes that everything he thought until that moment was wrong. With these aspects, Hâlî Ada takes its place in Turkish literature as a tragicomic adventure story. Ali Bey translated this 176-page story in 1311/1894.
