Notes
Dictionary from Arabic to Turkish prepared during the Mamluk Kipchak Turkish period. The name of the work can be translated into today's Turkish as "The Shining Pearl in the Turkish Language". The author calls his work "Tercümânü'l-Lugati't-Türkiyye" in his own words. The author and place of writing of the work, whose exact date of writing is unknown but is estimated to have been written in the 14th or 15th century, are also unknown. Although Caferoğlu states that the work belongs to Ebu Hayyan (2015: 157), Balcı states that this possibility is weak because the same mastery and command of the language is not seen in Ed-Dürretü'l-Mudiyye fi'l-Lugati't-Türkiyye when compared to Kitâbü'l-İdrâk li-Lisâni'l-Etraki, another dictionary written by Ebu Hayyan. thinker (2018: 58). Considering some Arabic grammatical features in the work, Zajaczkowski emphasizes the possibility that the work was written in Syria (1965a). "Men Halep şârdan men" (I am from Aleppo) or "Kaldim from Halep" (I came from Aleppo) etc. are included in the last section of the work where everyday sentences and speech examples are included. Sample sentences about Aleppo also indicate that the work may have been written in or around Aleppo. Each page of the 24-leaf work has an average of 15 lines and four columns. The work contains approximately 960 words and the number of sample spoken sentences is 228. The work differs from many other Kipchak Turkish dictionaries in some aspects. Unlike some dictionaries, the work does not contain a grammatical section. Unlike other Kipchak period dictionaries, it has a separate section containing many sample spoken sentences and formulaic expressions related to daily life. In this respect, the work also serves as a practical conversation and daily understanding guide. The work is divided into 24 thematic sections, including foods and beverages, fruits, colors, professions, numbers, diseases, nuts, as well as Turkish male names and Turkish female names. Except for the last part of the work, the other parts are in the form of dictionary lists and equivalents. The last chapter, titled "Terkîbü'l-kelâm ve kelâmu mürekkeb", serves as a speaking guide. Flattening and diphthongization examples such as Eserdetaŋuz'domuz', takuz'dokuz' indicate a different and typical Kipchak dialect and also that the author belongs to this dialect community/is located within that environment (Ercilasun 2004: 390). In addition, v- vey- derivations at the beginning of words observed in examples such as vıyal- 'shame', yeki'iki', yet'et' also provide clues about the variant used in the work, and these are issues that are not frequently encountered in other Kipchak Turkish dictionaries. The only surviving copy of the work is in the Eastern Manuscripts Department of the Medicae Biblitheca Laurenziana Library in Florence, Italy, number 130. is registered. According to the statement in 24a, the copyist of this manuscript is Hüsrev b. Abdullah (Toparlı 2003: VI). In this copy, written entirely in vowels and naskh, Turkish vocabulary elements and phrases are written in red ink, while Arabic words are written in black ink. Turkish elements are given below the Arabic elements and in a few places next to them. The work was found in the Laurenziana Library in Florence in 1963 by the Polish Turcologist Ananiasz Zajaczkowski, a Karaite Turk. Zajaczkowski published the work in different articles between 1965 and 1968. In these publications, Zajaczkowski includes general information about the work and its linguistic features, as well as a facsimile of the work and a dictionary (1965a/b/c-1968). The most comprehensive scientific publication of the work is Toparlı (2003). In this work, Toparlı, in addition to the facsimile edition, also provides the translation of the work into Turkish and an index of examples. Recep Yılmaz is Prof. Dr. In his doctoral thesis titled "Comparison of Mamluk Turkish and Oghuz Turkish Copies of "Ed-Dürretü'l-Mudiyye fi'l-Lugati't-Türkiyye"" prepared under the supervision of Osman Fikri Sertkaya, he evaluates the Mamluk and Oghuz Turkish variants of the work separately and examines them comparatively in the text section (2013).
