Notes
Work in the type of embassy book belonging to Nişli Mehmed Ağa (b. ?/? - d. 1145/1732). The work was written after Grand Vizier İbrahim Pasha, who wanted to benefit from the internal problems in Iran in the 1720s, sent Kapıcıbaşı Nişli Mehmed Ağa to Moscow as Middle Ambassador in order to establish an alliance with Russia against Iran. In Sefâret-nâme, which was written in the form of a daily memoir, Mehmed Ağa recorded in a sincere style the important stages of his civil service, starting from his departure from Istanbul in early October 1722, until February 17, 1723 (Unat 1987: 62). In the first part of Sefâret-nâme, which consists of four parts, Mehmed Pasha describes the Russians' defeat after the agreement made in 1720. Upon his activities against the Ottomans, he reported the Shirvan events to III. He talks about being sent to Russia as an ambassador with the task of presenting it to Ahmed. This part of Sefâret-nâme ends with the description of Mehmed Ağa's receipt of the Imperial Name and the Grand Vizier's letter in 1134/1722 and his departure from Istanbul with the embassy delegation assigned to him (Mertayak 2008). In the second part, the route followed after setting off from Istanbul. By giving information about the castles on this route, the events experienced, the troubles suffered and the places seen during the journey to Moscow are conveyed in a sincere and sometimes sarcastic style. Nişli Mehmed Ağa describes the castles he saw in the places he passed through during his travels as makeshift palanques. The Ottoman ambassador also insults and insults his translator Antonaki, who was appointed to his entourage by the Russians and made impossible demands of him. This part of the work ends with a detailed description of the embassy delegation's entry to Moscow (Mertayak 2008). In the third part, it is stated that there were similar ceremonial crises experienced in other embassy books. The Ottoman ambassador stated in his embassy that he would not travel from mansion to mansion, considering some proposals from the Moscow government as disrespect to the imperial name, that he would return if necessary, and that he even risked death (Unat 1987: 63). In the continuation of Sefâret-nâme, Mehmet Ağa states that he held the official reception ceremony after delivering the letters of the sultan and the vizier. In the last part of the text, he describes the details of the procession that the Tsar, who went to Petersburg before leaving Moscow, organized with his entourage and called "the Tsar's antics". In Sefâret-nâme, he describes the relations between the Ottoman Empire and Russia. The principles accepted by the Russians for its organization and their requests for the alliance are included. With all these aspects, the work shows how the ground for the first negotiations was prepared for the alliance between the Ottoman Empire and Russia in Istanbul in 1724, whose goal was the sharing of Iran, which was a crude dream. The work is considered an important historical document in that it describes the general attitude that prevailed in Russia at the relevant dates (Unat 1987: 64). There are two manuscript copies of the Russian Sefâret-nâmesi. One of them is in Istanbul, Topkapı Palace Museum Library, Revan 1313, and the other is between pages 79-127 of a journal registered under the name "Sefaretname-i Hatti Efendi ve Ahmed Resmî ve Nahîfî", Istanbul University Library, Yıldız Manuscripts, TY 6095 (Mertayak 2005: 8). Sefaretname-i Hatti Efendi and Ahmed Resmî ve Nahîfî. It was published by Unat (1942-1943). Additionally, Faik Reşit Unat introduced this work in his work titled Ottoman Ambassadors and Sefaretnameleri (Unat 1987: 62-65). Finally, a master's thesis was prepared by Aydın Mertayak on Sefâret-nâme (Mertayak 2005).
