Notes
Selîm-nâme is a prose work written in Persian by İdrîs-i Bitlîsî upon the order of Sultan Selîm and generally resembles Heşt Bihişt. The work is about Sultan Selim's life, his actions and the events until his death. The unfinished work was completed as a result of a long effort by Bitlîsî's son Ebülfazl Mehmed Efendi after his death, upon the order of Suleiman the Magnificent (Akçay 2021). Based on Şehabeddin Tekindağ (1970), Vural Genç stated in the article Selim-nâme that Ebülfazl also described his father's last days in the copy he compiled. This work, compiled and copyrighted by Ebülfazl, was written in a mixed form of verse and prose, and the new name of the work was determined as Selîm Şâh-nâme (Genç 2007: XXIV). Therefore, Selim-nâme, which was written by Bitlîsî himself but remained in draft form (Kırlangıç 1995: 34), and Selim Şâh-nâme, compiled and added by his son Ebülfazl, should be considered as two separate works. However, it is also possible to see this confusion in studies on the subject (Yüksel yty). A comprehensive study has been carried out to differentiate Bitlîsî's Selîm-nâme and his son Ebülfazl's Selîm Şâh-nâme (Aksoy 2021). In this study, the boundaries of Bitlîsî's work and Ebülfazl's work, the source of the former to the latter, were tried to be determined, and the content of the two works was separated sentence by sentence. It was stated that Selim-nâme is a prose work (Aksoy, 2021: 28). However, it is not unusual for Bitlîsî, who wrote most of his other prose works mixed with highly ornamented, artistic and verse texts, to write Selîm-nâme only in prose. The copy of Selîm-nâme, located in the Topkapı Palace Museum Library, Revan Library, archive number 1540, consists of 37 leaves. Considering that its author died of illness shortly after the death of the Sultan, it can be understood that the work was left unfinished at the end of 1520. Although the work began to be written to be presented to Sultan Selim, both the Sultan and the author did not live long enough for this (Aksoy 2021: 18). Selim-nâme is a historical narrative that tells the adventure of Sultan Selim starting from the governorship of Trabzon and coming to the sultanate, his struggles with the Sultan's wars, especially the Battle of Çaldıran, the conquest of Egypt, and the events of this period in chronological order. is a work (Aksoy 2021: VIII). The index at the beginning distinguishes Selim-nâme from Ebülfazl's Selim Şâh-nâme. In the index, titles were written about the events from 918/1512, when Sultan Selîm ascended the throne, to the end of 924/1518 (Aksoy 2021: 25, 54). After a short introduction in Selim-nâme, the "Sânihât" section came, and under this section, an index consisting of 23 titles was included (Aksoy, 2021: 32).Selîm-nâme is a Persian work written in prose with Arabic and Persian words as well as a small amount of Turkish words. Archaic Persian and Arabic words are frequently included. The work is written throughout with long sentences as well as artistic expressions and an ornate style. Selim-nâme is important in that it shows the harsh measures taken by the Sultan against the riots that occurred as well as the effects of the sect-oriented war of the Shah of Iran, through the eyes of the author who witnessed all of these (Aksoy 2021: 33-34). Two copies of Selim-nâme belonging to Bitlîsî have been identified. It was understood that the copy dated 1328 was copied from the first undated copy (Aksoy 2021: 34). One doctoral (Kırlangıç 1995) and two master's studies (Hatunoğlu 1998; Aksoy 2021) have been conducted about the work. It should not be forgotten that the studies on Selim-nâme and Selîm Şâh-nâme mentioned above are indirectly closely related to each other. For the biography of Müverrih, see.
