Notes
The work of Sadreddin Konevi (d. 673/1274), consisting of his correspondence with Nasîrüddin Tûsî (d. 672/1274), one of the famous philosophers and scholars who were followers of Avicenna, about various topics of metaphysics. The work, whose full name is el-Mürâselât beyne Sadriddîn Konevî ve Nasîriddîn et-Tûsî, contains questions, answers and evaluations between Konevi and Tûsî among the independent treatises titled "Risâle-i mufassıha" and "Risâle-i hâdiye" belonging to Konevi. Konevi criticizes the views of philosophers on various issues, especially the philosophy of Ibn Sina, and discusses the possibilities of philosophy and reason from this point of view. Tûsî, on the other hand, tries to answer these criticisms by taking into account the principles to which the Peripatetic philosophical tradition adheres. In the correspondence, issues such as whether the existence of the Necessary Existence is something additional to His reality, whether possible essences have been created or not, whether the types of beings called common and general existence are possible, what the principle of the philosophers' theory of emanation, "From one comes to the other", are discussed. Konevi criticizes some of the views of Ibn Sina, whom he praises as "Sheikhu'r-Reis", by referring to his works and Tûsî's commentaries on these works. Likewise, Tûsî evaluates Konevi's views by mentioning some of his works. The work as a whole is important in terms of understanding the relationship between philosophy and Sufism. Considering the development of Sufism as a discipline dependent on religious sciences such as fiqh, hadith and kalam, Konevi criticizes the claim that it was possible to form a consensus between Sufis and theologians in the past, and argues that only philosophers can have some common opinions with muhakkik Sufis. This situation is a result of the new understanding of Sufism, which gained a metaphysical character with Ibn al-Arabi and Konevi. According to this understanding, Sufism is a metaphysical discipline that can reveal a view of existence and knowledge and claim objectivity, and in this respect, its addressee should be philosophy, which has the same claim. In this sense, in this work, Konevi emphasizes the importance of the observation method in reaching the truth by drawing attention to the limitations of rational methods, as he occasionally expresses in his other books. The work was published by German orientalist Gudrun Schubert together with Konevî's Risâle-i mufassıha and Risâle-i hâdiye (Beirut 1995) and by Abdullah Nûrânî in "Ecvibetü'l-mesâʾili'n-Nasîriyye" (Tehran 1994), and Ekrem Demirli wrote these in Sadreddin. Correspondence Between Konevî and Nasireddin Tûsî: He translated it into Turkish under the name of el-Mürâselâ (Istanbul 2002). For the author's biography, see.
