Notes
The story translated by Ali Muzaffer Bey. "Andre Ivanovitch" is the first story of the work called "Les Cruautés de l'Amour", written by the French writer Judith Gautier in 1296/1879 and consisting of 4 different stories. The Andre Yovanovitch story begins with Clelia's escape to a village in the north of Vologda on a cold winter night. Clelia, a noblewoman, grew up with a foster family because she lost her parents at a very young age. Her stepmother Prascovia wants to marry her to an old man. Unable to bear the atrocities inflicted on her, Clelia escapes from the castle with the help of Pavel. Pavel Petrovich entrusts Clelia, whom he loves like a child, to his friend Ivan and his family. Clelia Gregorowna, who agreed to live in the Siberian steppes to escape from Prascovia, stayed in the Yovanovic household for 6 months, hiding her true identity from the village people. Andre Yovanovic, Ivan's son, is a knowledgeable, honest and brave young man. In order to avoid suspicion, the village people are told that Clelia and Andre are engaged. Although the young people fall in love with each other over time, Andre thinks that he cannot be with Countess Clelia because he is the son of a slave. While Clelia leaves the village after receiving the news of her stepfather's death, Andre commits suicide and is taken to the castle for treatment. Meanwhile, Clelia ensures that Andre and his family live as free people. Over time, Andre realizes that Clelia's love is real, and the story results in the engagement of the two young people. The work is important as an indicator of the diversity of Ali Muzaffer Bey's translations and the fact that he follows French literature very closely. Ali Bey translated this 288-page story under the name "Andre Yovanovic" in 1312/1896. For Ali Muzaffer Bey's biography, see. “Ali Muzaffer Bey”. Turkish Literature Names Dictionary.
