Notes
The commentary written in Arabic by Dâvûd-i Karsî (d. 1160/1747) on Birgivî's (d. 981/1573) work titled Risâle fî usûli'l-hadî, and the annotation written in Arabic by Yûsuf Şükrî. The author completed his work in Egypt in 1251/1835. The work was printed in Istanbul Matbaa-i Âmire on 11 Cemâziye'l-ûlâ 1293/1876 and is registered in the Süleymaniye Library İzmirli İsmail Hakkı Collection number 450. There are no clear headings in this concise work, which contains the basic concepts of the hadith method. The original text is in parentheses. Yûsuf Şükrî did not annotate the entire text with the same intensity. His explanations are more on topics that he thinks are not sufficiently understood. Sometimes he contented himself with writing briefly the meaning of a word, the work of an author, or the author of the work more clearly. Yusuf Şükrî begins his annotation by saying the Bismillah and praising Allah. The first issue mentioned about hadith is the definition of hadith terminology. Explanation of takrîr and similar elements included in the text, definition; It continues with the explanation of terms such as muhaddis and hafiz. Then come the hadiths of merfû', mavkûf and maktû', which are types of hadith according to their source. After the definition of the concept of sened and related explanations, the terms of hadith types muttasil, munkati', muallak, mursel, mu'dal, müdelles are emphasized according to the status of the sened. After the weak hadith types such as shâz, muallel and munkar, the issue of division of the hadith in terms of its authenticity is explained. The conditions that a narrator must meet when processing an authentic hadith are mentioned; In this context, hadith types such as mawzu' and hasan are also pointed out. Concepts such as aziz, stranger, famous, individual are also included in the work; Finally, some important and subtle issues of the field related to the narrations named as shaz, munkar, sahih, weak are mentioned. The author, who is stated to have a sincere love for the prophet since his childhood, wrote his work about Hz. He finished by sending blessings to the family and companions of the Prophet (pbuh) and the generations that came after him. At the end of the work, Yûsuf Şükrî He also included an Arabic petition in which he appointed the Prophet as an intercessor. Yusuf Şükrî's annotation was, of course, shaped according to Dâvud-i Karsî's commentary on Birgivî's work. This is partly why he made relatively more explanations about some issues, such as the justice of the companions. On the other hand, his citing of sample hadiths on some subjects and his evaluation of their authenticity are among the prominent features of his annotations. In addition, it is understood that Yûsuf Şükrî had the same views as Dâvud-i Karsî on almost all issues. However, he also expressed his objections to the issues on which he thought slightly differently. The work is important as it is one of the compilations on the hadith method written in the last periods of the Ottoman Empire. However, when considering Ibnu's-Salâh's (d. 643/1245) Ulûmu'l-hadîs and some commentaries made on it, which was one of the breaking points of the hadith method and shaped the content of the works written later, it should be noted that the said compendium does not include many topics evaluated within the scope of the method and that there are not enough discussions on some issues. There is a point that should be contacted about the work. Another point is that there are some doubts about the belonging of the work called Risâle fî usûli'l-hadîsi, which is thought to be the original, to Birgivî. The work came to the fore with Dâvud-i Karsî writing a commentary; It has not been included in any history book before. Although Dâvud-i Karsî made some statements and stated that the treatise belonged to Birgivî, Yûsuf Şükrî said that Dâvud-i Karsî said, "This did not convince me and my students." He understood the sentence regarding the treatise's belonging to Birgivî; but did not comment further. More detailed studies are needed to solve this issue of belonging. There is no study that focuses only on the work. However, İbrahim Saylan (2008) prepared a master's thesis focusing on the transmission and evaluation of the hadiths used by Yusuf Şükrî in his works and wrote an article (2020) produced from this thesis.
