Date 15th century
Notes A dictionary-grammar that was compiled or copied for the purpose of teaching Turkish to the Arabs. With the increasing dominance of the Turks in Egypt and its surroundings from the end of the 13th century, Turkish also gained importance. The work was written to meet the public's need to learn the Turkish language. The name of the work can be translated into today's Turkish as "All Identified Rules of the Turkish Language". The copyright date and author of the work, which is estimated to have been written in Cairo in the early 15th century, are unknown. Although it is stated in the first page of the work that El-Kavânînü'l-Külliyye belongs to Abu Hayyan, this information is incorrect and it is understood that it was added to the manuscript later. Because it is known that Abu Hayyan passed away in 1344. The author of the work emphasizes that he wrote this work upon request and insistence, with the following information given on the third page, and that he is not a Turk, but that he is close to the Turks: "Dear friends - may God glorify them - insisted that I put forward the basic rules of the Turkish language in the sense of a guide […] I wrote this beautiful book. […] I am neither a Turk nor a Turkish son, and I have not been to their countries. My knowledge is based on what I heard from them, as I have met and been together with them a lot. […]" (Toparlı et al. 1999: VII). This indicates that the author does not have an advanced command of Turkish, that he learned Turkish among the Turks, and that he wrote his work only with the information he heard or learned from the Turks. However, the author's command of Arabic grammar rules suggests that he may be an Arabic linguist. In addition, it is possible that the author lived in Cairo or completed his work there. Unlike other Mamluk field linguistic works, the work does not have a dictionary section, but word lists are given in the grammar sections (Ercilasun 2008: 389). Apart from the praise, introduction and conclusion sections, the work includes three main sections: verb tense and suffixes, noun and its dependents, and suffixes. Turkish words and expressions are written in red ink and with vowels. Arabic expressions and phrases are in black ink. The only copy of the work is registered in the Martyr Ali Pasha Department of Istanbul Suleymaniye Library, number 2659. This copy was first published by the Turkic Studies Institute in its original form by Kilisli Rifat Bilge in 1928, with a foreword by Mehmed Fuad Köprülü (Toparlı et al. 1999: III). In this publication, the text is given in its original form without any comment. Despite this, explanations in the form of footnotes can be found on some pages. Following this publication, in 1937, Hungarian researcher S. Telegdi published the index of the work in German and some other grammatical issues, based on Kilisli Rifat's publication. The last and most up-to-date study on the work belongs to Recep Toparlı, Sadi Çögenli and Nevzat H. Yanık (1999). In this study, there is a translation of the work into Turkish, an example index and a grammatical index, as well as a color facsimile edition. The study also includes the introduction (methal) written by Fuad Köprülü for Kilisli Rifat's publication verbatim.
