Notes
A multilingual dictionary-grammar prepared for the purpose of teaching Turkish to Arabs during the Mamluk Kipchak Turkish period. The name of the work can be translated into today's Turkish as "The Book Bringing Together Turkish, Persian and Mongolian Equivalents". Of the 76-leaf work with 13 lines on each page, 63 pages are a dictionary-grammar from Arabic to Turkish and 13 pages are a dictionary from Mongolian to Persian. Although according to Houstsma it was written on January 28, 1245, Barbara Flemning suggests that this date should be corrected to 1343 (Toparlı et al. 2000: V). The work was written or copied by a Turk from Konya named Halil bin Muhammed bin Yusuf el-Konevi, about whom there is not much information. In addition to the basic Arabic-Turkish vocabulary, it also contains a small amount of Mongolian-Persian and Arabic-Mongolian equivalents. It contains a total of around 2 thousand vocabulary elements in all languages. As is the tradition, the work starts with Besmele, Hamdele and Salvele and then continues with the "Sebeb-i Te'lif-i Kitâb" section. The work generally consists of 4 sections: Nouns, Infinitives of Verbs and Imperative Forms, Word and Verb Conjugations, Sentence Rules (Ercilasun 2008: 386). The first part of the work contains a total of 1100 nouns and 18 verbs. The second part of the work contains 455 verbs and 15 nouns. In the third part of the work, the verbs are given in the singular second person imperative form, unlike the Arabic tradition. In addition, four tenses/tenses including imperative, past tense, future tense and present tense and their examples are given. In the last part of the book, general information is given on interrogative suffixes, noun sentences, inflectional suffixes, some case suffixes, some pronouns and prepositions, and question particles. There are a total of 26 frequently used vocabulary categories in the work, which lists words with a thematic classification. These categories are as follows:1. Height and its related names2. The place and the people there3. Water etc. things4. Tree, fruit, plant, etc. things5. Agriculture and grain6. bird etc. things7. Wild animals etc.8. Pest etc. things9. Horse breeds, colors, etc. things10. Weapons, horses and war equipment11. Camel and cattle12. Sheep and goat13. Food, food, beverages and milk14. Disease-disease and the devil (Toparlı et al. 2000: 3-4) The only known copy of the work is in the Levinus Warner Collection in the Leiden Academy Library in Leiden, the Netherlands. According to Houtsma, this copy was completed in 1245. However, Barbara Flemming corrected this date as 1343, and Poppe gave it as 1343. The first scientific study on the work was conducted by Martin Theodor Houtsma (1894) in Leiden under the name Ein Türkisch-Arabisches Glossar. This study includes the facsimile of the work and the German equivalents of Turkish vocabulary elements. Following this work, Poppe (1927/-28) published the Mongolian part of the work. Kuryshjanov (1970) also worked on the work. A comprehensive scientific publication of the work was carried out in Türkiye by Recep Toparlı, Sadi Çögenli and Nevzat H. Yanık (2000). In this publication, the work has been translated into Turkey Turkish and the headings of the articles have been listed in translation, respectively. The last study on the work was done by Garkavets (2019). In this study, Garkavets rearranged the work in printed letters and prepared a comprehensive index (Salan 2019).
