Notes
Mirza Fethali Ahundzade's critical article written in Persian in Tbilisi in 1871. The full name of the work is Kritika About Mirza Ağa's Plays. In this article, the author expressed his thoughts about the four plays sent to him by the Iranian playwright Mirza Agha. These four plays criticized by Ahundzade are important in terms of showing his thoughts and ideas about theatre. At the beginning of this article, Akhundzade firstly appreciates the Iranian playwright Mirza Agha for his efforts and wishes him well. Then, the author describes theater as an "honorable science" and defines theatre. He examines Mirza Agha's plays one by one and expresses the deficiencies. First of all, according to Ahnudzade, since the plays will be watched by everyone, there should be no rude or shameful words or actions in the plays. That's why the toilets, impurities, etc. in Mirza Agha's Şrəf Hanpiye. He says that words like these should be removed from the play. According to him, the name of each person in the plays should be written at the beginning. As a matter of fact, there are people whose names are not written in the Şrrəf Club. The art of drama should improve the morality of the people and the plays should be exemplary. Ahundzade wants the name of the play Kövkəb ve dəhbaşı Qasım written by Mirza Ağa to be changed to Sərgüzəşt-i dəhbaşı Qasım ve Kövkəb, and states that although this play is very well written, it is not suitable for acting in the theater, it is only suitable for reading, and that it would be appropriate to mention this situation in the play. Ahundzade finds another play by Mirza Ağa, Sərgüzəşti-Şahqulu Mirzə, unsuitable, stating that it is very dirty from head to toe and that there is dirty behavior in this play. Finally, the author states that there is no theater in Iran, but theater is very developed in Europe and theater writers are highly valued; He completed his criticism by saying that Molyer and Shakespeare were the best among them, that the era of works such as Gülüstan and Zinətü-'l-məcalis had passed and now was the time for novels and theater. When we take into account Ahundzade's criticisms of the plays of Iranian playwright Mirza Agha, we can say that he thought that the purpose of theater was to educate the public, to awaken the public and to make them think. According to Ahunzade, there should be no obscene or immoral words or behavior in the theater and the theater should be instructive for the public.
