Notes
Mirza Fethali Ahundzade's modern story, written in 1857 and first published in 1859 by being included in the Temsilâtes series. The work was written in Azerbaijani Turkish. The subject of this story is taken from İskender Bey Münşi's Persian work called Tarih-i Alemara-yı Abbasî. In the work: It is told to the Shah of Iran that one day Merrik and Scorpion will come close to each other in the sky and that a great disaster will happen to Iran and its Shah and that the Shah must stay away from the throne for three days in order to escape from this situation. By drawing lots, a man named Yusuf Sarraj is placed on the throne. Vügar Sultanzade, in his article titled Aldanmış Kevakib's Archetype, states that although the source of the story is the work called Tarih-i Alemara-yı Abbasî, Ahundzade unknowingly used a motif whose origins are based on Sumerians, Assyria and Babylon. He states that this motif is seen as a symbol of disaster in certain forms that the celestial bodies have taken or will take, and that it is the motif of temporarily appointing someone called "şar puhi" to head the country in periods when it is considered dangerous for the ruler. He also states that research shows that the "şar puhi" tradition is not limited to Assyria and Babylon, but is also seen in regions close to Mesopotamia and Iran. Therefore, Ahnudzade has actually taken up a motif in this work without realizing it. The Magi tells the Shah of Iran that one day Merrik and Scorpion will come close to each other in the sky and a great disaster will come to Iran and its Shah. Another astrologer, Mevlana Cemaleddin, who heard this incident, came to the Shah and said that he could prevent this disaster, and that the Shah should abdicate the throne fifteen days after Newroz and be replaced by someone who is guilty and deserves to be killed. Thereupon, Mollabaşı Ahund Samed wants a man named Yusuf Serrac to be brought to the throne, saying that he deserves to be murdered because he is an atheist. Serrac Yusuf was born in the village, studied in Isfehan, and is an educated person who hates the clergy. Yusuf is forcibly ascended to the throne even though he does not want to. As soon as he ascended the throne, he dismissed the Shah's viziers and officials. He orders the construction of roads, bridges, nursing homes, hospitals and irrigation works, and alleviates the tax burden of the people. Although the people begin to love Yusuf for what he has done, former officials try to provoke the people. The rebels dethrone Joseph and kill many of his supporters. When the astrologer Mevlana Cemaleddin learns that sixteen days have passed since Nevruz, he finds Shah Abbas and puts him back on the throne, and everything becomes the same as before. Yusuf Shah has disappeared. Abdulla Şaik describes his work Hekâyet-i Yusuf Şah (or Deceived Kevâkib) as a "historical story", Feyzulla Kasımzade as a "story", and Nadir Memmedov as a "povest". Seyfulla Esadullayev, in his article Deceived Kevâkib is the First Realist Novel, claims that this work is the first realist novel in Azerbaijani literature; However, Yusuf Akpınar states that since the characters and Yusuf Sarrac in this work are not covered in more depth, it can be a great story rather than a novel. Akpınar states that Deceived Kevâkib was written in a relatively simple language and with a realistic view and that it is the first important work of the Azerbaijani prose language (story and novel). According to Seyfulla Esadullayev and Akpınar; The story has two separate lines of development. One is Shah Abbas and those around him, the other is Yusuf Sarraj and his friends. Shah Abbas, viziers and officials criticized feudalism, religious ignorance and oppression; Yusuf Sarac and his friends also represent knowledge, common sense and justice. While the Shah Abbas group is "religious" and dishonest, the Yusuf Sarraj group is "irreligious" and honest; However, the "irreligion" attributed to the Yusuf Sarraj group is an adjective used by those around Shah Abbas. In the story; The arrangements made by Yusuf Shah are what Akhundzade wished to be done in the Eastern world in his own time. Yusuf Shah is a fair, intelligent, astute statesman; Therefore, he was drawn as an ideal type that other shahs and rulers should also be like. Akpınar states that the target of the satire in the story is not only Iran but also Tsarist Russia; because he says that both states had a feudal administration and many oppressions were committed. Seyfulla Esadullayev, in his article Deceived Kevâkib is the First Realist Novel; He says that the main idea of the work consists of the necessity of radically changing the entire Shah administration and fighting against feudalism to liberate the people.
