Notes
Persian work of Bahâeddîn Muhammed Veled, commonly known as Sultân Veled, also known as Veled-nâme and Mesnevî-i Veledî. The work is called "İbtidâ-nâme" because it is the first masnavi of Sultan Veled and the text begins with the word "ibtidâ". It started to be written on the first day of March in 1291 (27 Safer 690) and was completed on the fourth day of June of the same year (4 Cemazeyilahir 690). According to the translation made by Abdülbaki Gölpınarlı, Mesnevi contains 167 headings and 8755 couplets, excluding the introduction and introduction. According to the doctoral study conducted by Cemşid Karabeyoğlu, there are 165 titles and 9007 couplets in the work, apart from the dictionary. Ibtidâ-nâme, which contains 76 Turkish, 180 Arabic and 23 Greek couplets, was written in the aruz "fe'ilâtün mefâ'ilün fe'ilün" pattern, based on Hakîm Senâyî's İlâhî-nâme. The “dîbâce” part of the work and the chapter titles were written in prose. The function of the chapter headings in the work is to prepare the reader for the topic discussed in detail in the verse section by summarizing the topics covered in the verse sections. Although some technical flaws arising from the nature of the aruz meter stand out in İbtidâ-nâme, a simple, fluent and clear narrative style attracts attention as a stylistic feature that pervades the entire work. Sultan Veled can be considered a kind of reason for copyright. Dîbâcede explains the reason for writing İbtidâ-nâme as follows: His friends asked him: "You followed Mevlana and created a Divan; it is necessary to follow him in the masnavi as well." Sultan Veled also wrote the work in an effort to liken himself to that esteemed person (Gölpınarlı 1976: 2). Although this effort is the reason for writing the work, the main purpose of the author is to ensure a correct understanding of some points in Mesnevi. Namely; In his Mesnevi, Mevlana narrated the situations of himself and his companions such as Seyyid Burhâneddîn Muhakkık-ı Tirmîzî, Şemseddîn Muhammed of Tebriz, Sheikh Selâhaddîn Ferîdûn of Konya, Çelebi Hüsâmeddîn of Konya, hiding them in the stories of past greats. However, over time, some people no longer have the understanding and insight to notice the subtlety in this style of expression. Sultan Veled underlines that he wrote this work in order to inform those who lack understanding and perception that the positions, miracles and inner states that his father reported in Mesnevi through the stories of the past are actually the states of Mevlana and his friends, and to eliminate the doubts that arise in their hearts about them. In this respect, it would not be misleading to say that Sultan Veled wrote İbtidâ-nâme as a kind of commentary on Mesnevi. Since Sultan Veled's aim is to unveil these types of stories, which are told in a veiled and symbolic language in Mesnevi, he necessarily uses a plain, clear and understandable language. Since a language focusing on the purpose rather than the language and artistic power is preferred in Ibtidâ-nâme, a plain, simple and clear narrative appears as a determining style. The work, which has many copies in manuscript libraries, is written by Celâl Hümâî in Iran. (1315), and was translated into Turkish by Abdülbaki Gölpınarlı and published in Turkey (1976).
