Notes	Arabic prose treatise of Ümm-i Veled-zâde Ali Efendi, in which the Sufi is symbolized with "şem'/mum". The candle is an important symbol in many religions. In Sufism, the burning of a candle causes the heart to be filled with love; The burning candle corresponds to the divine light. For this reason, various dreams have occurred around candles in Arabic, Persian and Turkish literature (Onay 1996:498). The manuscript copy of the work is located in Köprülü Manuscript Library, Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha Collection, number 34 Fa 1581/22. No other copy of the work has been found yet. This copy is either incomplete or mistakenly attributed to Ummu Veledzâde Ali Efendi. There is no trace of the author in the copy. In addition, the text is completely different from the long passage included in Nev'îzâde Atâyî's Şakâyıku'n-Nu'mâniyye Zeyli. The treatise was written in a symbolic language and a seci' style. The author has concisely collected the traditional understandings shaped around candles. Accordingly, the candle is an ascetic of good stature, with a smiling face and eyeliner; He is a lover whose heart burns and melts with the trouble of love. He revives you at night with his tears. He constantly remembers Allah with the verses of the Surahs Duhan and Nur. His upright stance is a sign of monotheism. He sacrifices his head for his friend; He is the confidant of his relatives. Candle is the light with which Allah guides whom He wills to the right path. In the Treatise, quotations are made from the Surahs Duhan and Nur, as well as the 32nd verse of the At-Tawbah Surah, the 61st verse of the Furqan Surah, and the 8th verse of the Saff Surah. The fact that the candle does not lose its vitality even if its head is cut off is associated with the verses stating that the light of Allah will not go out, contrary to the expectations of the unbelievers.
