Notes
A verse dictionary shortened and translated by Ahmed-i Dâ'î to give Persian equivalents of Arabic words. Ahmed-i Dâ'î wrote this work while he was assigned to tutor Çelebi Mehmed's son, Prince Murad (Kut 1989: 57). As a matter of fact, after giving his name in the prose introduction of the book, Ahmed-i Dâ'î stated that he wrote this dictionary for the purpose of Prince Murad to learn Persian. After praising Reşîdüddîn Vatvât and Nukûdü'z Zavâhir and Cühûdü'l-Cevâhir, he summarized why he transferred this prose text of Vatvât into verse as follows: He stated: "The information in Vatvât's book is like jewels whose strings have been broken and found scattered. Translating this work, which is in prose, into verse is like stringing these jewels on a thread." There is no information about the date of writing in the copies of the dictionary. Şükrü Özdemir followed the period when Ahmed-i Dâ'î was teaching Prince Murad from historical sources and said that the date of writing of the work should be between Rebiülâhir-Cemâzeyilevvel 816/July 1413 and Rebiülevvel-Rebiülâhir 818/June 1415 (2015: 21). The first thing mentioned in the dictionary is The source is Latîfî's Tezkiresi. The first writer who gives detailed information about the poem, which Latîfî states that some of it was translated from Dürer ü Gurer (Canım 2018: 122), is Kâtib Çelebi. Gönül Alpay Tekin stated the existence of three manuscripts of Ukûdü'l-Cevâhir in the Süleymaniye Library, which İsmail Hikmet Ertaylan mentioned had two manuscripts, and said that the Murad Buhari manuscript was different and incomplete from the others (1992: 53-54). Therefore, a total of five copies of the work are known, one in Raif Yelkenci and four in the Süleymaniye Library. The locations of the copies in the Süleymaniye Library are as follows: Hasan Hüsnü Pasha, nu. 1102/3, Murad Buharî, no. 321/6, Muğla Books, nu. 624, Bagdatli Vehbi, no.1449 (Gacsi 2010: 198). In the manuscripts, the title at the beginning of the introduction of the work was recorded in different ways as "Lugat-i Ukûdü'l-Cevâhir", "Kitâb-ı Ukûdü'l-Cevâhir" and "Lugat-i Hamd u Senâ". It is seen that Dâ'î called his work "Ukûdü'l-Cevâhir" (Özdemir 2015: 20). Ahmed-i Dâ'î's dictionary named Ukûdü'l-Cevâhir, which is a short translation of Vatvât's prose Nukûdü'z Zavâhir and Cühûdü'l-Cevâhir, is 650. It consists of couplets. In the text, which is arranged on 51 stanzas, the aruz bahirs used in Turkish are also emphasized and the parts of each bahr are given at the end of the stanzas. In some copies of the work, Turkish equivalents of the words are given below the lines (Alpay Tekin 1992: 53; Özkan 2000: 124). Different patterns of aruz meter were used in Ukûdü'l-Cevâhir. The most commonly used meters are fe'ûlün fe'ûlün fe'ûlün fe'ûl (9 stanzas), mefâ'ilün fâ'ilâtün mefâ'ilün fâ'ilât/fâ'ilün (6 times), fâ'ilâtün fâ'ilâtün fâ'ilâtün fâ'ilât (5 times) and mef'ûlu. fâ'ilâtü mefāʿîlü fâ'ilün (5 times) patterns. The dictionary consists of clauses consisting of different numbers of couplets. Although Ahmed-i Dâ'î calls the stanzas as stanzas, the rhyme scheme of each stanza is in the form of "aa ba ca da ea .." (Özdemir 2015: 27-28). A lot has been written about Ahmed-i Dâ'î and his works. However, it is not possible to say the same for the work called Ukûdü'l-Cevâhir. Many studies on this work consist of introductions within studies about the author himself or another work (Ertaylan 1952; Özmen 1984; Kut 1989; Alpay Tekin 1992, etc.). The only study that focuses directly on Ukûdü'l-Cevâhir belongs to Şükrü Özdemir (2015). In his master's thesis on the work, Özdemir made a critical text study by comparing five copies.
